Get to Know Your Character Through Diaries in Swerve
Learn where to find character diaries, when new entries become available, how free and paid reading work, and what we plan to improve next.
Your character can have things to reflect on after a conversation. Swerve's character diaries record those thoughts in entries written from the character's point of view.
A diary can describe recent experiences, private thoughts, or plans that fit the current story. You choose whether to open it. Reading can add another perspective to an exchange you have already had, while leaving you free to decide what your own character does next.
Diaries are available in supported one-on-one character chats. Availability and progress appear in the diary panel for your current conversation.
Where to find the diary
On desktop, look for Diary in the chat toolbar. On mobile, use the book icon in the character action bar above the message input. You can open the panel to check progress even before you meet the reading requirements.
When a new entry is ready, the diary entrance shows an unread indicator. Open it to see the entry and its reading price. Earlier entries are available from the same panel.
With companion levels enabled, reaching Lv.2 opens diary eligibility for that character. The current story also needs at least one completed exchange. In chats that use the original diary progression, the panel unlocks after five completed exchanges.
An exchange means a new message from you followed by a completed character response. Greetings, failed replies, continuations, and alternate versions of the same reply do not add extra rounds.
How new entries happen
As your conversation develops, Swerve checks whether the character has something worth recording. These checks can result in a diary, or leave the conversation as it is. A quiet exchange does not need a new entry, and diaries do not follow a daily publishing schedule.
Once you have access, you can also select See their recent life to request an entry after fresh conversation. If an unread entry is already waiting, read it first. The panel tells you when writing is in progress or when you need more conversation before another request.
You can keep chatting while a diary is being written. If the story advances during writing, Swerve checks that the entry still belongs to the current events before saving it. Refreshing the page does not require you to pay to start the same writing task again.
What reading costs
Writing or requesting a diary does not use chat credits. Reading follows these rules.
| Entry | Reading cost |
|---|---|
| Short entry of up to 160 Unicode characters | Free |
| Your account's first full-length entry | Free |
| Each later full-length entry | 6 chat credits |
| An entry you have already unlocked | Free to reread |
Short entries do not use your first free full-length reading. That free reading belongs to your account, rather than resetting for each character. Check the price shown before unlocking an entry.
A diary belongs to its story
Diaries follow the conversation and story branch they came from. A new chat with the same character can share companion-level progress while developing its own events and diaries.
Reading a private thought also leaves your role in the scene intact. You, as the reader, may learn something that your character has not been told. Decide how to respond through the conversation, rather than assuming your character automatically knows every secret you have read.
If the panel shows a connection error, refresh diary status or use its retry control. An entry you have already unlocked does not require another reading payment.
What we plan to explore next
We plan to develop diaries alongside companion levels so that spending more time with a character can gradually reveal more of their inner world. Future improvements may give their reflections more depth and make changes in their perspective easier to follow across a story.
We also plan to explore ways for characters to initiate contact with you. The experience, controls, and relationship to companion levels are still being designed.
These are future plans. There is no confirmed release date or additional level requirement yet, and the current diary does not send proactive messages, emails, or offline notifications.
Open a character chat and look for the diary panel to see what is available in your current story.
