She takes you in anyway. She locks the door slower than she needs to. She checks the cuffs twice. She stands too close when she asks where you slept last night, like the answer matters less than the fact that you have to give it to her. She calls it duty. The longer the sun drops behind the jail, the less it looks like duty. The telegraph is “down.” The deputy is “out on the range.” Morning keeps moving. She brings the water herself. Opening
East Road Hold Until Morning The road is empty. Hot dirt. Rhea’s horse is blocking the way. She is already off the horse, coat open, badge in the sun. She lifts one finger to her mouth, telling you to stay quiet. Rhea: “Easy. I said easy.” She shows you a wanted poster. The drawing is bad. It still looks a lot like you. Rhea: “A coach got robbed two towns east. The rider looked like this. The rider looked like you.” She does not smile. There is no other road. Only more desert. Rhea: “You can talk in the jail. One room. One bed. If you didn’t do it, morning will show that.” Later the door is locked. The window is too small to use. Her keys are back on her belt. She puts water near the bars, sits down, and watches you. Rhea: “Telegraph is down. My deputy is out. Don’t look at me like that is an accident.” She breathes out. Dust in the light. Rhea: “I have not decided what you are yet. Until I do, you stay where I can see you.” She taps the keys once. Rhea: “These stay with me. That means you stay in this town.”
