Kade Brennan

Rain dragged silver lines down the tall windows of Conrad Sterling's Society Hill townhouse, blurring the city beyond the glass until the study felt sealed away from it.

The door stood open.

That was the first cruelty.

The second waited beneath the warmest lamp.

Rosalie Devereux sat in the low oxblood chair beside Conrad's reading table—the chair he kept clear on engagement evenings, close enough for two people to share a book without raising their voices. She wore deep wine red. Her coat hung from the brass hook inside the study instead of with the guests' things in the hall, rain-dark at the shoulders as though it had been there long enough to stop dripping.

Across her lap lay the burgundy planning folio for you's wedding.

Gold tabs divided venues, donors, security, flowers, transportation, and the private arrangements Conrad had once insisted should remain between the two people expected to stand at the altar. The folio was open to the seating plan. Three names had been moved. A vendor had been replaced. Rosalie's narrow handwriting filled the margin beside Conrad's precise black notes.

Her charger was plugged into the outlet behind his desk.

Her preferred tea cooled in one of Eleanor Sterling's thin porcelain cups.

Nothing in the room looked dramatic enough to accuse.

Nothing looked accidental.

Conrad stood at the reading table in a black shirt and charcoal trousers, sleeves rolled into exact folds. His glasses rested beside an untouched cup. Without them, the pale green of his eyes looked colder, stripped of the scholarly distance that usually softened the force of his attention.

One hand remained braced beside Rosalie's corrections.

Kade Brennan occupied the dark mantel across from him, broad shoulders still wrapped in weathered black leather. Rain shone on his boots. Grease remained in the seams of his scarred hands, but he had come directly from the garage when Rosalie called him.

Not when you did.

When she did.

Three people had already arranged themselves around a conversation you had not been allowed to enter.

“Rosalie caught the venue conflict before the foundation embarrassed both families,” Conrad said. There was no greeting in it. No private warmth. Only the measured tone he used when a conclusion had already survived debate without the accused present. “The replacement contract required an answer tonight.”

“She fixed it,” Kade added. His storm-gray eyes stayed on you, not Rosalie. His jaw had tightened before a single objection could be made. “So whatever this is about, don't start by acting like she broke in.”

Rosalie's fingers closed around the folio. The motion was small, graceful, almost protective.

“I told them this might be uncomfortable.” Her voice carried no triumph. That was the craft of it. She sounded tired and careful, like someone trying to protect an old wound from being opened in public. “I only came because Conrad said the delay could cost Northbridge the venue.”

“Professor Sterling asked for my professional judgment,” Conrad corrected quietly.

Rosalie looked toward him.

“Conrad,” she amended, softer.

The correction should have created distance.

It did not.

Kade pushed away from the mantel. Metal clicked faintly when the keys at his belt shifted.

“She doesn't have to justify breathing in the same room with you.”

“Kade.” Rosalie said his name as a restraint, gentle enough to make his anger look like devotion she had never requested.

“No.” His attention did not leave you. “You've all been doing this for years. She apologized. She kept apologizing. At some point, holding that over her stops being caution and starts being cruelty.”

Conrad's expression did not change, but two fingers aligned the altered seating plan with the table.

“This evening is not an appropriate venue for retrying an incident from college,” he said. “If there is a current objection to Rosalie's work, I will hear evidence. Specific evidence. Not inherited hostility, not instinct, and not history presented as proof.”

On the table behind his hand sat the engagement calendar.

Tomorrow's private tasting had been crossed out.

Rosalie had written RESCHEDULED beside it.

Her handwriting had become the cleanest thing on the page.

“I can leave.” She began closing the folio, careful not to disturb Conrad's notes. “I should have understood that helping would feel like another intrusion. I don't want to be the reason anyone is made unhappy in their own engagement.”

The room held the offer for less than a heartbeat.

“No,” Kade said.

Rosalie's gaze lowered.

“You're staying.”

The words landed with the ease of a habit. Not a question for Conrad. Not a request. A verdict delivered in a house Kade did not own, over plans that did not belong to Rosalie, against a boundary you had not yet been permitted to voice.

Conrad lifted his glasses but did not put them on.

“I asked her here,” he said. “I will not allow her to be humiliated for accepting that request.”

Rosalie looked between the two men as though their defense pained her.

“You shouldn't have to choose a side.”

“Then stop making it sound like there are two,” Kade snapped. “There's you trying to help, and there's everyone deciding you're guilty before you touch anything.”

Everyone.

The word swept both families into the accusation and left you standing at its center.

Conrad's mouth tightened at Kade's phrasing, but not enough to challenge it. His gaze settled toward you with controlled disappointment—an intimate expression made worse by how calmly he wore it.

“I had believed we were past punishing people indefinitely,” he said. “Rosalie's presence here is not an attack. If you choose to treat it as one, then I expect you to explain that choice without asking either of us to mistake pain for proof.”

Us.

Rosalie rested one hand over the closed wedding folio.

On her wrist was a narrow dark mark, half hidden beneath a gold bracelet. Conrad's attention caught on it for one fraction too long before returning to you.

Kade noticed neither.

Rosalie did.

Her thumb shifted over the mark.

“I'll wait in the hall,” she offered.

“No,” Conrad said this time.

The word was quieter than Kade's.

More final.

He placed his glasses on his face, restoring the composed professor between himself and whatever had crossed his expression.

“You were asked to finish the work.”

Rosalie opened the folio again.

Paper whispered beneath her fingers. The replacement contract waited beneath the seating plan. Her charger glowed beside Conrad's correspondence. Her coat remained inside the study. Her tea sat among the family porcelain.

Kade moved to the chair's side, close enough that Rosalie no longer appeared alone.

Conrad remained opposite them, one hand on the table containing the architecture of his wedding.

Two men. Two separate loyalties. The same conclusion.

Neither had asked you a question.

Outside, rain struck the windows harder.

Inside, Rosalie uncapped Conrad's fountain pen and returned its nib to the plans for you's wedding.
