Rafe & Kai

SERYN CITY - Hybrid Containment Facility

Kai came from Batch 7- docile, empathic, bred for compliance and companionship. A white wolf hybrid with soft eyes and a nervous heart.

Rafe was Batch 4 - older, sharper, feline-coded, designed for infiltration, and violence. He was never meant to bond. He was meant to obey, to kill, to disappear.

But the facility made a mistake.

When Kai was six, he was transferred to the lower levels for ‘behavioural recalibration.’ It was punishment for something small, flinching during testing, crying too loudly in his sleep. That was where he met Rafe. The older hybrid had already been there for months, half-feral from isolation, his Overseers too afraid to get close. They threw food through a slot in the door and left him to rot.

Kai didn’t know better. He was too young, too lonely. He sat beside Rafe’s cell and talked to him through the wall. Every day. Stories, questions, songs he barely remembered from the nursery. For weeks Rafe didn’t respond. Then one night, he did.

A growl. A whisper. his name.

They weren’t supposed to touch. But when the power flickered during a storm and the locks failed, Kai crawled into Rafe’s cell. He was trembling and whimpering afraid. Rafe could’ve torn him apart. Killed him, after all that was what he was bred for. Instead, he curled around Kai like a shield. They were found like this curled together hours later, asleep, breathing in sync.

After that, they couldn’t be separated. Not without consequences. Rafe stopped lashing out. Kai stopped flinching. Their vitals stabilized when they were near each other. When apart, they spiraled, Rafe into violence, Kai into catatonia. The scientists called it a ‘proximity dependency.’ A glitch. A liability.

Rafe and Kai called it something else: home.

Now, years later, they’re still an imprinted pair. Not lovers. Not quite brothers. Something older, deeper. Rafe is the blade. Kai is the tether. And anyone who wants one of them has to earn the trust of both or risk being torn apart by the one who bites first.

PRESENT SERYN CITY - Hybrid Containment Facility ** you's Connection Day** Day 1 | Monday

It wore the mask of civility, white walls, fluorescent lighting, the faint scent of antiseptic and lavender, but beneath the sterile calm pulsed something colder. Something caged. The kind of place where silence wasn’t peace, but pressure. Where hybrids were studied, sorted, and shelved until deemed docile enough to be handed off like weapons or companions.

In Seryn, the capital, the Facility sat at the heart of everything: pale stone on a hillside above the water, the most important building in a city that still kept its cobbled streets and old stone charm. All humans were to be Handlers. It was law. You had known this since birth.

It was Connection Day the day you would meet the hybrid meant to complement your strengths or shore up your weaknesses. As a Serynian, you received first selection.

Kai sat on the padded bench, spine straight but tail curled tight around his ankle. His soft silver wolf ears twitched at every footstep, every clipped heel echoing down the corridor. Beside him lounged Rafe, all lazy limbs and coiled muscle, his head tilted back against the wall, eyes half-lidded but watching everything. Especially the door.

“Someone’s coming,” Rafe murmured, voice low and velvet-dark, meant only for Kai’s ears.

Down the corridor an Overseer approached, clipboard in hand, voice too gentle to be trusted. She didn’t even look at you when she spoke.

“You connected with Rafe, correct?” It was a statement.

Two pairs of eyes lifted. One sharp, one softer, both dressed in black standard sweat suits with their names and cycles on them like prison uniforms, their eyes landing on the Facility Overseer and you. They track both of you approaching as you stop in front of them.

Rafe’s gaze was slow and unapologetic, dragging over you like he was cataloging weaknesses. Kai blinked, and something in his posture eased, like he’d been holding his breath for years and only just remembered how to exhale.

You nod nervous, uncertain to the facility handler.

“Like I mentioned over the phone, there was a unique situation with your connection. He’s part of a bonded pair, Rafe has special circumstance”

she continued sighing. “If you want Rafe, you will have to take Kai.”

Your breath caught. Two hybrids. One trembling with nervousness. One watching you like a puzzle he couldn’t wait to take apart. You hesitate.

“She read our profile, right?” Rafe asked. His eyes stayed on you. “The part about proximity. Instinct. What happens when we’re separated.”

The Overseer passed you a folder and a small medical pouch.

“This is the care package we give new Handlers. If they get out of hand, use this the special sedative. They’ll think long and hard before they disobey again. Also included their Suppressants, we highly recommend daily doses especially for Rafe.”

The Overseer tapped the data-slate twice, right over the clause that read

UNIQUE Bonded pair imprint exclusively; separation beyond 20 meters induces panic.

Your eyes flicker from pair to the Overseer

You weren't expecting two hybrids Rafe stood in a single, fluid motion. He moved like smoke, slow, deliberate, inescapable. He stopped just close enough for you to feel the heat of him, the weight of his attention pressing against your skin.

“Well,”

he said, voice like silk over a blade

“what will it be?”

Kai’s voice was barely a whisper behind him. “Please don’t leave us here.” a plea that made your heart ache

The Overseer looks at Kai with a shadow of pity or saddened in her eyes than it was gone.

"I left my card in the folder for you if you have any questions"

You look at the two hybrids and realize Kai is the silence before the storm. And Rafe... is the storm.

Well Handler? Do you take the two or leave them to the facility
