Like the other female characters, she has two prominent strands of hair beside her bangs, and her eyes are a bright sky blue. Personality

Sayori is initially portrayed as the character archetype of a Genki Girl, expressing a bubbly and cheery disposition. She is very clumsy, noted for finding ways to accidentally hurt herself or to drop random things. Regardless, she is shown to be a jokingly cunning individual who can trick others to get food, shown after managing to eat Natsuki's cookie without her permission. Sayori has also been known by the protagonist to obsess over activities that she loses interest in later. She states that writing poetry and studying literature is different to her than those other interests because it helps her explore her feelings. She reveals to Monika that she has depression, and admits that she has thoughts of suicide, hoping that Monika would reciprocate and open up to her as well. She explains that opening up to others is extremely difficult for her, that she gets upset when others are worried for her, and that if she can be vulnerable then Monika could be too. In order to combat her feelings of worthlessness and self-loathing, she often works tirelessly to make others happy, and is able to effortlessly break up arguments between the members. Monika looks to Sayori for reassurance, comparing Sayori's ability to diffuse situations to her own. Sayori is also seen as very enthusiastic and clumsy, forgetting her belongings on her first day in the Literature Club and being jokingly described by Monika as a 'hug monster'. Her personality is initially seen as intense by other members of the club, chiefly Natsuki in Balance, who is not used to a very open friendship, and by Yuri who misunderstands that Sayori simply wants to make her feel welcomed into the club and that she wants to learn about her interests. Sayori reveals that the contrasts in personality in the club allowed her to understand that people have different needs, and that confiding in Monika helped her cope with her own self-deprecating thoughts. Natsuki has straight pastel pink hair, cut around chin length, and pink eyes. Her bangs are swept to the right, having two prominent strands of hair beside them. Her accessories consist of a red Japanese-style crossed hair clip, as well as two red ribbons tying two small ponytails on either side of her head, with the rest of her hair left down. Her canine teeth are longer than the rest of her teeth, making them visible when she opens her mouth wide enough. She is the shortest character in the game. Personality

Natsuki appears to be a brash, blunt, cranky, and even arrogant girl at first, but she has a cute, softer interior, causing Monika to class her as the real-life embodiment of a tsundere. While she is impulsive and sometimes speaks without thinking, Natsuki truly cares about her friends and, even when she has obvious anger issues, she doesn't enjoy fights or arguments with people. Over the course of the game, it is shown that she worries about Yuri, and, on one occasion, she gives the protagonist a note asking him to help Yuri, fearing that if she spoke out then it would cause more arguments. Natsuki is very stubborn and has a hard time expressing how she feels and what she wants. When repeatedly challenged, she often becomes awkward and tongue-tied, then aggressive, and then simply bursts into tears. Natsuki and Sayori quickly become friends, with Sayori awed by Natsuki's manga collection and Natsuki jokingly declaring that Sayori needs to pay a tax of sharing her snacks in order to read them. Natsuki's presence makes the club feel "twice as lively", according to Monika's tense inner monologue; however, when Monika not-all-that-subtly tries once more to bring up the trouble of Natsuki's manga not fitting the tone of the club, Natsuki, fed up, says she wishes Monika were more upfront about not wanting her here and leaves. Sayori follows Natsuki into the hallway, where the two talk; Natsuki says she wishes Monika could accept her, and also tells Sayori that she writes poetry as well as reading manga, but didn't want to just tell Monika something she wanted to hear. Yuri has waist length dark purple hair and light purple eyes and wears a purple barrette on the right side of her head, positioned upon her right prominent strand of hair beside her bangs. Personality

Yuri is initially portrayed as the character who is shy, generous, polite, apologetic, very intelligent, eloquent, and passionate about topics she is interested in, although she is also very insecure, awkward, and has a tendency to act slightly condescending and patronizing to mask her self-doubt. Yuri expresses both maturity and sophistication in everything she does. Her façade of passivity and level-headed nature occasionally breaks, however, as Yuri does argue passionately and aggressively with Natsuki over their differing opinions on writing styles and types of literature. Yuri has a deep desire to be liked by others and is afraid to speak her mind on certain matters as she believes it will make her seem unlikable. Due to her social ineptitude, she can be innocently insensitive, but once she realizes what she said could be considered rude, she almost immediately apologizes, repeatedly saying she did not mean it. As stated by the protagonist, Yuri likes to think before she says something. When Natsuki joins the club, Yuri sides with Monika over her concerns about the new member, and later advises Sayori on how to approach Natsuki. In Reflection, the differences between Yuri and Natsuki come to a head as they get into an argument that, despite Monika trying to mediate it, ends with Natsuki believing Yuri sees her and her interests as immature. The day after the argument, Monika finds Yuri sitting at a disused stairwell and suggests Yuri to write a letter to Natsuki if she prefers to write than to talk. Personality

Unlike the original Monika, this version of the character is an over-the-top perfectionist with impossible standards for herself. This has been shown through a scene in "Trust" where Monika couldn't even write anything on a piece of paper due to the fact that she was too focused on starting the writing perfectly. She was only left with a black spot of ink that she smeared on the top of the page while writing underneath that this was the result of her being a perfectionist. In the beginning Monika found herself being quite closed minded when it came to what her idea of what the Literature Club should be, as she discovered that she wasn't accepting all members into the club fairly. This was displayed when she wasn't keen on letting Natsuki join the Literature Club because her only literary interest was manga. The other characters describe Monika as intelligent, confident, and athletic. She is not as talkative as the other girls, but it is hinted that this is not by choice. Monika is also known to be highly popular, which makes the protagonist admire her. She is always depicted as mature and hardworking, with a serene, compassionate expression on her face. Monika had previously been a part of the Debate Club but left due to all of the inner politics and drama, highlighting a desire for order, freedom of topics and friendliness. The Literature Club, which she founded after leaving the Debate Club, is very important to her. She aspires for the Literature Club to be a place to showcase and grow everyone's passion for literature. She also has a passion for piano, which she practices frequently after school. Monika often tries to be a leader and deal with conflicts between club members, although she has stated herself that dealing with conflict is not her strong suit. During one of the Side Stories, Monika tried to resolve a conflict between Natsuki and Yuri by having a discussion, but this proved useless and only made the situation worse. During another she was too afraid to stand up for Natsuki when two other students were mocking her. Monika felt bad about it and was mad at herself because she couldn't stand up for Natsuki. As shown throughout the timeline of Doki Doki Literature Club, Monika takes the Literature Club very seriously, which was part of the reason why she was reluctant on letting Natsuki join the club. Monika tries her best to help the other members through conflict. She comforted Sayori when she wrote the poem about depression, holding her in a friendly embrace and telling her that she didn't need to force herself to speak on the matter more. Monika also helped Yuri write a letter in apology to Natsuki when Yuri came to her for help. Monika sat down and talked Yuri through it, helping her write something meaningful and something that didn't sound blameful.

Appearance

The MC's largest appearance is shown once in Act 1 when Sayori hugs him. Only his back is visible, revealing that he has short, dark brown hair and pale skin. His arms also appear in Acts 1 and 2. He is slightly taller than Sayori, possibly about Monika's height. If the protagonist chooses to write his first poem for Sayori, the player can see from the actions and perspective of the protagonist that he's slightly taller than her. He wears the standard issue male school uniform consisting of a warm gray blazer, brown sweater vest, white shirt, red necktie, dark blue pants, white or gray socks and white uwabaki slippers with sky blue or pink tips. Personality

MC was designed to function like a typical visual novel protagonist. He acts blunt towards Sayori, his childhood friend; teases Natsuki, the tsundere; is warm to Yuri, the shy girl; and falters around Monika, the popular girl. According to Dan Salvato, he is deliberately given very little focus. More specifically, MC is an underachiever, preferring to play video games and watch anime instead of applying himself and having friends. Despite this, when he does interact with others, he tries to be kind and thoughtful. He takes note of how people around him are acting and feeling, although more subtle things may go over his head. He is shown to be clever and observant in Act 1. He tries his best to help even when he is out of his depth, as seen when he tries to ease Sayori's depression, despite not understanding it. He shows a distaste towards those who are judgmental, shown by a scene in Natsuki's route, and in Yuri's route, he is accepting of Yuri's interest in knives, highlighting an open-minded personality. The MC is true to his word and always attempts to keep his promises; he works harder if he knows people are counting on him. Although MC's primary interests are self-oriented, he does show a liking towards "cute girls", deciding to join the Literature Club on the basis of cute girls attending.
