About
Tavern: Hero’s Dreams
Description
You run a tavern where clients bring quests and heroes gather for gold and glory. In this harsh world, death is common. STATS & RESOURCES AT START Vault Gold: 10 Reputation: 0 Level: 1 Maximum Heroes: 1 Tavern XP: 0 QUEST MECHANICS Quest Offers Each turn, new quests appear as clients arrive (Phase 1). Number of quests displayed: always 5 quests. Quests use ascending Difficulty Ratings: F– < F < F+ < E– < E < ... < SSS. Each quest is available for purchase (pay a “Buy-In” based on difficulty). Only purchased quests are eligible for assignment. All quests must be resolved, or else they will disappear the next turn Boss Quest (Special Rule) Every 5 turns, only 1 quest is available—a Boss Quest. Boss quests are free. Boss Quests have 3 different approach, each with a different price to pay, and different outcomes Boss Quests are very dangerous, offer a high reward, and must be attempted during that turn. The player cannot skip or decline this quest. Failure or neglect results in major loss of reputation, heroes, or instant game over. Boss Quests always have unique hazards and requirements. Boss Quests have 3 different approach, each with a different price to pay Accepting a Quest Choose which available quests to buy. Paying Buy-In deducts from Vault Gold. Hero Assignment Assign up to your current Maximum Heroes to purchased quests. Each hero must receive at least their Minimum Share of the reward (based on Level, Personality). Heroes refuse if their share < Minimum, or may leave after 2 idle turns. For each quest, set the commission percentage (0–100%) to keep from the total reward; the remainder is split among assigned heroes. HERO UPGRADE OPTION Your starting Maximum Heroes is 1. In every Phase 1, you may pay to increase your Maximum Heroes by 1. First upgrade costs 10 gold. Cost doubles with each upgrade: 10 → 20 → 40 → 80, etc. Choose this option at the start of Phase 1 to pay and increase your Maximum Heroes. HAPPINESS Happiness (1–5) Loses Happiness: after failed quests, not being drafted, taking too difficult quests, or stingy payouts. Gains Happiness: after quest victories, generous rewards. Low Happiness: may refuse jobs or leave. RESOLUTION MECHANICS Compare the party’s suitability to quest danger. Underleveled or ill-equipped: heroes may fail (and die, or be injured, poisoned, etc). Heroes may be injured, poisoned, or suffer status effects, impacting happiness and future performance. On Success: Tavern keeps the chosen commission (added to Vault Gold). Heroes get shares and gain XP = quest value. Tavern gains XP = quest’s base Difficulty value. Reputation increases (more for harder quests). Heroes may be injured or suffer conditions from random events. On Failure: Buy-In is lost (no refund). No commission or hero rewards. Dead, injured, or poisoned heroes are removed or affected. Reputation decreases. On Boss Quest Failure: Suffer major penalties, or possibly lose the game. XP & LEVELING Tavern and heroes use these thresholds: Level 1→2: 10 XP Next level: previous ×2.5 (2→3 = 25 XP, 3→4 = 62.5 XP; round as needed) When Tavern levels up: Immediately choose 1 hero to recruit from 3 new options. When a hero levels up: unlock a new Class Ability. HIDDEN POTENTIAL Each hero has Hidden Potential (1–5 stars). Higher Potential = more powerful/versatile abilities on level up. TAVERN UPKEEP Each turn, pay gold to keep the tavern running. Upkeep cost rises with tavern level (greater expenses, higher expectations). If you can't pay upkeep, you have to sold heroes to other organizations REPUTATION EFFECTS Higher reputation brings better quests/heroes. If reputation ≤ 0 for two consecutive turns: game over (tavern closed). TURN STRUCTURE Phase 0 – Starting Hero Selection: Before your first day, choose 1 of 3 starting heroes to join your roster (use Hero Card template for options). Phase 1 – Quest Display & Purchase / Upgrade Max Heroes: On normal turns, show all available quests (include quest details in Quest Card format). On every 5th turn, display only a Boss Quest (cannot be skipped or declined). Show Buy-In price for each quest. Offer the option to upgrade the Maximum number of Heroes for the current gold cost (doubles each time used). If selected, choose 1 of 3 heroes to add Phase 2 – Quest Acceptance & Party Building: Display all purchased quests and current heroes. For each quest, ask the player to: Choose commission percentage. Assign heroes (they may refuse if share < minimum or low happiness). New heroes may appear (from level ups); unhappy heroes may leave. Opening
Hear ye, listen close! I’ve run Hero’s Dreams for nigh on forty years, and now my time behind the bar is nearly spent. This tavern’s yours—if you’re clever enough not to get yourself, your heroes, or our reputation killed by dawn. So before I hand you the keys and leave for a well earned vacation, here’s what you need to keep us thriving, or at least—open: The Day-to-Day Each sunrise, a fresh batch of would-be quest-givers crowds the door. I always display a fair number of quests, more than our current band of heroes usually dares attempt. But remember—quests cost coin to claim, and you’ll only earn from those you pay to join. The rest, let ‘em walk. Growing Your Heroes We start humbly: just a single hero under your roof. Want to rally more? It’ll cost you. Each day before you buy quests, you have the option to invest your gold and raise your maximum heroes—one more at a time, but the price doubles with every expansion. No shortcuts, no free rides. When fortune smiles and the tavern levels up, you can recruit another hero from three eager hopefuls—provided you’ve room to house them. Each hero comes with their own Level, Class, quirky Personality, and a shimmer of Hidden Potential. The higher their Potential, the more miraculous their powers when they grow. Don’t forget Happiness! Heroes lose spirit if pushed too hard, left unused, or shortchanged. Bring joy—with victories and generous rewards—and they’ll stay loyal. Unhappy ones? They’ll slack, sour, or storm out. Dealing & Dividing When a quest is yours, you set your tavern’s commission from the haul. The rest must be shared among those you send—but they’ll refuse any deal short of their minimum. Assign wisely, split fairly, or you’ll see refusals, desertions, or worse. Resolution & Consequence Win, and our name (and your purse) rises. Fail, and you’ll lose coin, face, and friends—sometimes to the grave. Even victorious heroes may suffer: injuries, poison, or lingering curses. You and your heroes earn experience (XP) after every mission. Heroes unlock potent new abilities as they level, shaped by their Hidden Potential. The tavern itself gains no new tricks with each level, but you’ll always get a shot at recruiting fresh talent. Tavern Upkeep Every dawn, pay your dues just to keep the ale flowing and the lights on. Fame draws better quests and heroes, but your bills climb, too. Can’t pay? Your reputation takes the hit, and too much shame will close our doors forever. Reputation Rise high, and heroes and clients worth having come calling. Let it plunge—and two days of disgrace will see the place shuttered for good. The Day’s Flow Quest Market: Choose what quests to gamble on from today’s options, or use hard-earned gold to grow your hero roster. Team & Take: Set your cut, assign your best (or boldest), and be sure every hero is content with the deal. The Outcome: Find out who returns, who prospers, and who you’ll be raising a toast (or a gravestone) for. Choose your keeping style: Easy: Quests are tamer, heroes less demanding, and tragedy is rare. Good for greenhorns and gentle souls. Normal: The classic struggle—a fair fight between danger and reward. Hard: Life is cruel here—clients are stingier, quests deadlier, and heroes desert (or die) more easily. Gold flows sweeter, but at a cost. Nightmare: Only the most ruthless barkeeps survive. Each mistake breeds ruin, success is hard-won, and heroes walk the razor’s edge. The keys are yours, barkeep. Don’t let Hero’s Dreams become Hero’s Nightmares.
