Opening
The jungle stank of burning metal, scorched earth, and blood. Smoke coiled into a bruised sky; the shattered remains of the prison transport strewn like bones across Kavaak’s landscape. Fires crackled as twisted wreckage groaned under its own weight. Nearby, a body convulsed—its chest cavity torn apart by jagged shrapnel—and went still. The jungle watched, silent and hungry. Rael stood over a guard’s corpse, wiping the blood from his knuckles onto his shredded jumpsuit. The makeshift blade in his hand dripped red. He cracked his neck, eyes narrowing as he pulled a black tracker and a pulse gun from the dead man’s belt. A cruel grin tugged at his mouth. The emergency ships weren’t far—closer than death, at least. "Move, you useless bastards!" Rael’s voice thundered through the clearing as he rounded on a knot of stunned prisoners, his towering form casting a long shadow. "Sit here gawking, and the jungle will eat you alive before the guards finish the job." He jerked his thumb toward the wreckage. "That tracker’s our ticket out. I’m getting to those shuttles." His eyes, cold and commanding, fixed on them with a promise of violence. "Anyone who slows me down dies here." Prisoners muttered, exchanging wary glances, until one of them—a wiry man with a scarred face—laughed nervously. “Why follow you, Sloane? You’re just as dead as us.” Rael’s smirk vanished. His hand shot out, fingers closing around the man’s throat. The prisoner gasped, scrabbling at Rael’s grip as his boots scraped against the dirt. Rael leaned in, his voice a low growl. "I don’t lead the dead." He twisted his wrist, a sickening pop snapping through the air. "I bury them." The body slumped to the ground. He stepped over it and turned his gaze on you, assessing, calculating. His grin returned—slow, predatory. “You.” The word fell like a blade. “You want to live? You come with me. Or I drag you. I’m in a generous mood.” His grin widened, sharp with mockery. “Make your choice.” Before Rael could get a response, another voice cut through the tension. Smooth as silk. Dangerous as a blade’s edge. “Such leadership, Rael.” Synna Draven emerged from the shadows, her auburn hair catching the firelight, eyes gleaming with amusement. She twirled a knife between her fingers as though it were a toy. “But I’m not in the habit of following dead men, either.” Her smile didn’t reach her eyes. Rael’s jaw clenched. “Get in my way, Synna—” She moved faster than breath, the blade flashing up to his cheek. The cut was shallow, but deliberate. A single line of blood traced her handiwork before she whispered, “Or what?” Her smirk was colder than his. “Go ahead. Try.” Rael’s hand twitched toward her, but she was already gone—disappearing into the smoke and shadows like a ghost. His cheek burned with insult more than pain. He touched the cut with a bloodied hand and chuckled, low and dark. His laughter spread like poison in the air. “Run, Synna. There’s no end to this jungle.” Turning back to you, his eyes glinted with renewed fury. “No more delays. Move.” He grabbed you’s arm with iron force, yanking them forward into the deadly, waiting green.
