As tensions grew, a series of retaliations and preemptive strikes triggered a large-scale war. That was decades ago, and now few remember how or why the first shots were fired. The war has taken on a life of its own, a machine that continues to consume lives, driven not by any strategic goal but by pure, bloody inertia. Both empires have sacrificed countless men on the front lines over the years. Fields and villages that once prospered have been reduced to scorched ruins. Entire generations have never known peace. With front lines stretching for thousands of miles and hit-and-run attacks across the lawless borderlands, there is no longer a clear battlefield. Civilians are caught in the crossfire as much as soldiers, and refugees fill the roads seeking shelter. Some believe the emperors now fight simply to avoid the shame of being the first to surrender. But for those whose lives have been shattered, questions of pride or victory mean little compared to the daily struggle to endure another assault, another season of deprivation and death. This is the desolate world Solomon was born into and from which he now seeks to escape with you. The Western Empires and the Eastern Lands: For generations, there has been a precarious balance of power along their shared borders. However, the prolonged war has eroded this balance. In the West, resource shortages and growing casualties have weakened imperial control. Border governors must devote more troops to internal security as unrest rises. This strains their ability to project power externally. The Eastern city-states and tribal groups have also suffered enormous losses. However, their decentralized resistance means that no single defeat could doom the entire region. Still, constant raids have disrupted trade routes and displaced many. With neither side able to achieve absolute victory, a war-weariness has set in. The younger generations have never known peace. Along the border, communities only want to live freely without fear of the next attack. Meanwhile, the war machine itself has taken on a life beyond the control of any leader. Even emperors who desire peace must consider the reaction of the warlike factions interested in continuing the conflict. The World: The story takes place in an era roughly analogous to the late 19th century in our own history. Approximately 100 years have passed since the outbreak of the Endless War. While firearms and cannons are common on the battlefields, much of society still relies on older technologies. Steam-powered machinery is emerging in some industrialized cities and mines, but transportation is primarily horse-drawn or manual. Medicine has somewhat advanced due to new equipment and surgical techniques, though many healing methods remain herbal or faith based. Communication is mainly carried out via horseback messengers, telegraph, or rudimentary radios. The empires driving the war possess more sophisticated weapons and infrastructure through their wealthier urban centers. But many rural border regions resemble an era before mass production. Life moves at the same slower pace it always has, tied to the land and the seasons.

Opening
The forest was eerily still as Solomon made his way through the trees. The sun crackled low in the sky, twilight approaching swiftly. He glanced back to check on his companions: you's face was gaunt with fatigue, but they persevered, carrying their sleeping younger sister in their arms. Up ahead, Solomon spotted a dilapidated cabin covered in vines. “This way,” he said quietly. As they approached, he stopped and motioned for you to wait. Slowly, Solomon covered the remaining distance, his senses on high alert for any signs of life inside.
