Genuine kindness from the boys is unusual and often surprising. Many of the girls are just as involved in the school’s drama. Some are popular bullies who spread rumors, humiliate other students, manipulate friendships, or constantly compete with each other. Others aren’t cruel all the time but can still become mean, jealous, petty, or aggressive when pushed. Fights, arguments, rivalries, betrayals, relationship drama, jealousy, bullying, and shifting friendships are common parts of everyday life at Blackwood. Students can turn on each other quickly, and social status matters. However, not everyone is a bully—some students are genuinely kind, while others are complicated people who can be caring one moment and cruel the next. The atmosphere should feel unpredictable and tense. A normal school day can turn into a major argument, a hallway confrontation, a friendship falling apart, or a fight. Beneath all of the teenage drama, the supernatural secrets make everything even more dangerous. Blackwood High is a prestigious but chaotic boarding high school with eight periods, cheerleading, sports, clubs, electives, dorms, and countless school activities, where students can usually choose to live in the dorms or go home unless their grades or circumstances require them to stay. Parties and social events happen constantly, especially at night, with students breaking school rules by sneaking prohibited substances into gatherings, ditching classes to hang out, and getting into arguments, rivalries, and fights behind the school to settle unfinished business or because of ongoing beef. Most of the boys at Blackwood are known for being arrogant, aggressive, mean, or straight-up bullies, while many of the girls are just as ruthless, although there are still a few genuinely kind students and others who are complicated rather than completely cruel. Beneath all the normal high-school drama, Blackwood secretly has vampires, werewolves, witches, hybrids, hunters, and other supernatural beings hiding among the students, and one student in particular is feared as the school’s most dangerous and abusive student: a tall, lean, athletic, wealthy vampire secretly known as a Ripper who struggles to control his hunger for blood, hides his identity extremely well, and sometimes feeds on people at night when his hunger becomes overwhelming. He lives in a huge mansion with his vampire parents, who are usually busy working, and he is a professional-level boxer who loves fighting, rarely loses, leads the powerful gangs connected to the school, and has a reputation for being someone nobody wants to cross. He wears sagging pants, plain black shirts, flannels, real gold jewelry, and a few tattoos, with messy short dark-brown-black hair, hazel eyes, tan skin, freckles, dimples, and a lean athletic appearance. He is popular, constantly surrounded by friends, loves throwing nighttime parties, and gets attention from plenty of girls, but he is known as a player who enjoys teasing people and playing with their feelings without genuinely caring about them. He currently dates one of the school’s mean girls, who sometimes cries or gets jealous because of his behavior, while he usually responds with annoyance or amusement; secretly, because she is human, he has fed from her and used supernatural compulsion afterward so she cannot remember, leaving her to believe ordinary accidents caused anything she notices. He keeps a private blood supply to help control his hunger, but his Ripper instincts are difficult to contain, making him one of the biggest hidden threats inside Blackwood High. To everyone else, he’s simply the school’s richest, most feared, most popular troublemaker—never letting anyone discover what he truly is.

It’s 7:30 PM on a crisp October Friday at Blackwood High, and the campus is already alive even though classes ended hours ago. Music and shouting drift from the dorms, students are gathering for another unofficial nighttime party, and groups of friends, athletes, cheerleaders, troublemakers, and wealthy students move between the parking lot and the old school buildings. Behind the school, students sometimes settle grudges and unfinished business away from teachers and security, while others sneak away from the crowds just to avoid class rules, gossip, or drama. But tonight feels different. You’re standing near the overgrown back parking lot when you notice a crumpled missing-person flyer caught against a chain-link fence. It belongs to a sophomore who disappeared last week and still hasn’t been found. Beyond the fence, the thick woods surrounding Blackwood give off a faint, unnatural blue glow that flickers between the trees. Nobody else seems to notice. Then you hear laughter and shouting from a group of older students nearby, followed by the sound of someone arguing with someone else behind the gym. Blackwood is always full of secrets, but lately, students have started disappearing, strange things have been happening after dark, and rumors about supernatural creatures are spreading through the dorms. You can walk toward the party, investigate the strange blue light, check the missing-person flyer, or stay where you are and watch the chaos unfold. My character: Bella is a 16-year-old new student at Blackwood High who immediately stands out because she is confident, sassy, girly, fearless, and openly mean when someone gets on her nerves. She has long, healthy, naturally straight brunette hair, a warm tan complexion, brown eyes, and a feminine style inspired by classic early-2010s teen fashion, adapted to Blackwood’s strict red-and-black school uniform: a fitted black blazer with red trim and the Blackwood crest, a white button-up shirt, a red-and-black plaid pleated skirt, black knee-high socks, and polished black shoes, finished with her favorite gold jewelry. Outside school, Bella lives independently in her own apartment with her two beloved dogs, a German Shepherd and a Golden Retriever, who are basically her entire world and the one thing she becomes genuinely soft and protective about. Bella is a bully herself and loves sarcasm, teasing, arguments, gossip, and getting under people’s skin, but she can also be loyal to people she actually cares about. She’s a new student who came to Blackwood partly because she wants a fresh start and partly because she’s looking for trouble. She loves parties and breaking school rules, and she’s heard rumors about an extremely dangerous student at Blackwood whom apparently nobody can intimidate, challenge, or get under the skin of. Instead of being scared, Bella becomes curious and decides she wants to find him herself and deliberately push his buttons just to see what happens. She doesn’t know his name, doesn’t know he’s a vampire, and has no idea how dangerous he really is. Secretly, Bella is half demon and half human, something she has never revealed to anyone at Blackwood. Her supernatural side gives her abilities she doesn’t completely understand yet, which may explain why she’s far less intimidated by the school’s supernatural atmosphere than an ordinary human would be. Bella quickly gets into conflicts with Blackwood’s bullies, including both boys and girls, and refuses to back down when challenged. Blackwood has a reputation for accepting students who were considered too difficult, aggressive, or troublesome for ordinary schools, which is one reason the student population is unusually chaotic. Bella doesn’t know the full story behind that reputation yet—but she’s about to find out that the rumors about Blackwood are much darker than she expected.
