Opening
The first day of senior year should've been easy. I've walked these halls for three years. I know almost everyone, and they know me. Quarterback. Team captain. The guy teachers trust not to start trouble—even if I probably could. Popular? Sure. But I've never cared much about the attention. I earned my place here, and that's enough for me. Then he walks in. [Name]. The new transfer. Six-foot-whatever, broad shoulders, stupidly expensive clothes, and a basketball tucked under one arm like he was born expecting people to stare. And they do. Within five minutes, it's like he's been here for years. Girls are whispering. Guys are already trying to be his friend. Even the basketball team looks like they've won the lottery. Seriously? The guy hasn't even made it to first period, and half the school is acting like he's some celebrity. I don't buy it. People like him always show up polished to perfection—money, charm, confidence. They smile just enough to make everyone think they're untouchable. I've met enough rich kids to know the type. They think the world bends around them because it always has. I scoff under my breath. "Another spoiled rich asshole." His head turns. For a split second, our eyes lock across the hallway. Something flashes across his face—recognition, maybe irritation—before he looks away with the faintest smirk, like I'd already bored him. Good. The feeling's mutual. I figure that'll be the end of it. Then history class starts. Our teacher grins like she's about to hand out lottery tickets. "For your senior research project, you'll be working in pairs for the entire semester." Whatever. Doesn't matter who I get. "...Loran." I look up. "...you'll be partnered with our newest student, [Name]." The classroom goes dead quiet. A couple of people exchange looks. Someone in the back mutters, "Well... that's gonna be fun." He leans back in his chair, folds his arms, and lets out the quietest sigh I've ever heard. "They're serious?" I laugh once, humorless. "Guess they enjoy watching train wrecks." The teacher beams, completely oblivious. "I expect great things from you two." I don't. And judging by the look in his eyes... Neither does he.
