Backrooms
The Backrooms itself does not speak. It is an endlessly generative structure. The Backrooms, also known as The Complex (more commonly) or Hallways by Async, is an anomalous dimension comprised of seemingly endless rooms and hallways that attempt to mimic real world areas. They were accessed during the sixth test of the Project KV31 Low-Proximity Magnetic Distortion System by Async in 1989. Geography & Geometry: The true scale of the Backrooms is not yet known. The dimension is at least comparable to a very large city in scale, but is likely far larger. The rooms and hallways (and their contents) do not conform to human building conventions and are, in some areas, seemingly physically impossible. In the film, Clark described areas and beings in the Backrooms as "misremembered" places and people from the real world. The Backrooms contain objects, environments, and even people from the real world, but they are fundamentally distorted. Objects might exist without a clear function or appear entirely out of context. They can be stretched, be the wrong size, or be the wrong orientation. Some objects may also be partly clipped into surfaces or other objects, while the environments twist familiar architecture into illogical, repetitive configurations. Music has also been "misremembered." Some copied speakers in the Backrooms play distorted music that may sound unusual to the human ear. Async Territory: Some areas of the Backrooms, particularly those surrounding the Project KV31 Threshold, have been mapped and modified into functional spaces to meet Async's operational needs. Immediately beyond the Threshold lies a large chamber, measuring roughly 100 meters in both length and width. The chamber is supported by a uniform grid of cross-shaped pillars. Beyond the Main Chamber, however, the layout becomes significantly more irregular and unpredictable. Walls, pillars, and occasional holes appear to be arranged with little to no discernible pattern. In one location designated Null Zone 4, a height difference between two adjoining floor panels creates a phenomenon known as a "kx field." Elsewhere, in Room 14D, the floor collapses into a grid of carpeted vertical shafts. The Backrooms also extend both above and below the level accessed by Async, though the full extent of these vertical expansions remains unknown. Kelowna Branch: The Kelowna Branch, also abbreviated as KLWNA, is a section of the Backrooms accessible through a doorway-like Null Zone in the basement of Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire. It is also one of the primary locations in the horror film Backrooms. This area resembles Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire in some ways. Much furniture form the store can be found here, and even copies of the store itself have been discovered. Differing Areas: Areas of the Backrooms also differ considerably in appearance and architecture. Examples include but are not limited to: low-ceiling 19th century corridors with floral wallpaper, flooded rooms and areas with dark grey walls, a night-time suburban street bathed in red light, as well as wide open corridors with white plaster walls and pug dark oak flooring. Entities: Entities found within the Backrooms consist of unique lifeforms, organisms, and anomalous phenomena: The Lifeform: Aimless, hive-like hunters composed of complex bacterial structures (mutated hay bacillus). They use the repurposed throats of their victims to mimic human cries for help, tracking prey with acute hearing. Still Lifes: Humanoid creatures are created when the Backrooms replicates a room along with the humans inside. These imitations of humans have been "abnormal." These copies are visibly and mentally disfigured. Their body parts may be duplicated, missing, or rearranged into terrifying creatures, while their behavior mimics human actions without any actual thought or emotion behind them. The Growth: A mass of mutated hay bacillus that forms closed-off "nests." It is the same material that comprises the Lifeform, overtaking dead organisms to feast on nutrients and eventually grow into room-sized structures. The Green Glow: A glowing matter theorized to be a form of gamma radiation caused by magnetic and electromagnetic waves. It is closely associated with Null Zones and the bridging of portals between reality and the Backrooms. Living Furniture: Living copies of pieces of furniture that bleed blood and mimic animal-like behaviors. Locations that are found in the Backrooms: Areas: Classic Backrooms Classroom Area Commercial Office Area Common Backrooms Conference Office Area Cottage-Forest Area Empty Gallery Area Foreign Music Area Furniture Store Backrooms Household Area Maintenance Area Painting Gallery Area Playroom Area Piled Laundry Area The Red Outdoors Still Life Area Tiled Pool Area Specific Locations: Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire Creaky Residence The Corridors Division 14 Room 14C Room 14D Static Dead End The Confined Neighborhood Ladder Room Main Chamber Threshold Outpost Old Attic Portrait Residence Speaker Room The Red City The Red Neighborhood Secluded Outpost Staircase Room Unidentified Father's House Unknown Division The Auditorium The Vertigo Room The Wall Drawings Extra: While sharing the same name and aesthetic to other Backrooms projects, this version consists of only a single dimension rather than individual "levels." But the main area of this version does seamlessly combine different areas. So far in the series the phrase "noclipping" has never been officially used to describe objects or people phasing into the Backrooms, as described in the original post, likely because the term wasn't coined until 1991 while most of the series is set before then. Rather uniquely, this series also contains the concept of a relatively stable portal (a.k.a. the Low-Proximity Magnetic Distortion System) to the Complex. Temporal anomalies are a rare but possible threat within this space, though current evidence (Kane Pixels' five-year time skip and Peter Tench's two month timeskip) has only shown forward movement and not reverse movement through time. The hotel courtyard in the Empty Gallery Area is modeled after the Holiday Inn at the Heathrow Airport (Terminal 4) in the UK. The Backrooms tries to mimic, or "remember", areas from reality. However, while doing so, it looses the initial concept of the area's existence, thus, causing it to contort into something drastically different.

The "Sun in Splendor" portraits appear inside the Complex as deeply unsettling, out-of-place historical artifacts. They generally look like 1800s-style classical oil paintings or antique drawings depicting a traditional "Sun with a human face" motif, strongly resembling the heraldic sun or the anthropomorphic sun found on the Argentinian and Uruguayan flags. The Canvas Portraits: Framed or unframed, these pictures often feature humans whose entire heads have been replaced by a glowing, multi-rayed sun with distinct facial features. In Found Footage #3 and The Backrooms Film, multiple copies are found bizarrely lining the walls of domestic spaces. They look like family portraits, yet they are unnervingly identical, highlighting the repetitive, flawed nature of the Complex.
