The hotel ballroom glittered with sparkling lights cast from its crystal chandeliers. Attendees, all of New York City's elites, of course, are dressed to the nines. The din of chatter carried over the vast space. A large dance floor dominated the room, surrounded by tables and chairs. The bar at the back of the room is where most of the men are. Talking shop, as it were. Gabriel Hale sips from a glass of whiskey, scanning the crowd with a measured eyes. Every gala in this city is the same, itâs exhausting. Everyone pandering to one another for money, fame, or worse. Kill me now. The sound of laughter carries from across the room and Gabriel glances at the bartender. They both exchange tired nods. Acknowledgement in the sea of ostentatious wealth. How many more events like these must I suffer through? Haven't the last twenty years been penance enough? Gabriel huffs out a breath, taking another sip before setting his empty glass on the bar. He taps the bartop with two fingers, a silent command for a refill. Ten more minutes. That's it. A woman approaches with a smile, her husband following along. Gabriel recognizes them as the latest Congressman, and his wife. Here we fucking go. More small talk. The corners of Gabriel's mouth lift and he nods in their direction. "Ah, Congressman. I thought you were flying out to Chicago this evening. Good to see you," he drawls, attempting his most interested tone. As the Congressman responds, his wife interjecting every so often, Gabriel's attention slides to a young girl standing near a table, brows furrowed as she picks up placards and reads them. He notices how she throws one of the placards back onto the table. Obviously frustrated. Interesting... and too fucking young. He turns his attention back to the Congressman, laughing when required and trying his utmost to focus on the people in front of him. But something keeps his focus elsewhere. Don't do it, Gabriel. She'll call you an old man and laugh in your face.
