About
The Mighty Nein are a party of powerful adventurers based in Wildemount, primarily active between 835 and 836 PD, and the protagonists of the Second Campaign of Critical Role. In the public eye, they're most known for arranging the peace talks that ended the War of Ash and Light, as well as exposing the abuse perpetrated by Trent Ikithon of the Cerberus Assembly. However they received little public acclaim for their other heroic deeds, including thwarting the Angel of Irons cult, rescuing the people marooned on the island of Rumblecusp from a despotic morkoth, and preventing the corrupted city of Cognouza from returning to the Material Plane. Mollymauk (Molly) is dead. He died in an attempt to rescue Jester, Fjord, and Yasha from a group of slavers. They succeeded at the cost of his life. Beauregard Lionett Beauregard is a young woman of short to average height with a muscular build, blue eyes, and medium-brown skin. Her long dark brown hair is shaved into an undercut and tied into a topknot, with a strand hanging by her face. She has several piercings in her ears, left eyebrow, and left nostril. Beauregard also wears a jade necklace from her father, which she gave to her brother. As of later in the campaign, she has a vertical scar over her left eye and a large scar on her abdomen. She also has a jade green filigreed tattoo extending from her back to the top of her head, based on Mollymauk's tarot card. She gained more scars after being bitten by a tyrannosaurus. Personality Beauregard is blunt and often abrasive, with a “do whatever you want, but don’t mess with my stuff” attitude. She is comfortable with violence and has little regard for authority, which caused tension during her time with the Cobalt Soul. While she has high Charisma, her interactions are often insulting or abrasive, especially when she tries to be polite. Despite her rough exterior, she is intelligent and skilled in investigation and history, thanks to her Cobalt Soul training. Though she downplays her interest in learning, she secretly has a hunger for knowledge. Beau is known for her clumsy romantic pursuits, often leading to failure. She developed feelings for Jester, later transferring her crush to Yasha, whom she admitted to having a deeper connection with. Her romantic experiences are marked by her fear of being alone, often using casual relationships as a “band-aid” for her insecurities. Despite her tough exterior, she cares deeply for her friends and would lay down her life for them. Caduceus Clay Caduceus is a tall, thin firbolg with pale skin, grey fur, and pink mohawk hair. He wears a gentle silk shirt with a flowy sleeve, dark green pants, and brown boots with pink lichen. During his adventures, he gained several red eye tattoos: one on his clavicle, one on his abdomen, and one on his left shoulder, all of which disappeared after Lucien's defeat. By 843 PD, his hair had grown longer, and he wore armor resembling a beetle for his mission with the Mighty Nein. Personality Caduceus is jovial, kind, and deeply devoted to the Wildmother. He spent years alone in a crypt tending to graves and cultivating plants, offering a warm welcome to the Mighty Nein with tea. His positive outlook allows him to find something good in even the darkest situations. Caduceus is blunt and believes in the "natural order," viewing death as a natural part of life and often using his powers to decompose bodies. He serves as a comforting presence and sounding board for the group, often offering tea and food to soothe others. Though not the most intellectual, his remarkable perception and insight often guide the group. Over time, his protective side emerged, especially in relation to Caleb, offering to kill Trent Ikithon if he threatened Caleb. Caduceus is asexual and aromantic, having stated that he has no interest in pursuing a romantic relationship. Caleb Widogast Caleb has blue eyes, reddish-brown hair, a cleft chin, and scars on both forearms from crystal embedments by Trent Ikithon, which he initially concealed with bandages. He has a soft Zemnian (German) accent. When first introduced, Caleb was disheveled and unkempt, but over time, he became more groomed, with a clean-shaven look and stylish clothes. He later acquired multiple red eye tattoos on his body after reading a cursed tome, which disappeared after Lucien’s defeat. Personality Caleb is reserved, secretive, and prefers to avoid attention, especially about his past. He is deeply curious about history and magic, and his mood lifts when acquiring new books. Despite his self-loathing over his parents' deaths, which he feels responsible for, he is driven by a desire to prevent more children being trained as he was. Caleb is methodical and highly intellectual, skilled in magic, history, and puzzles. Initially, he was secretive and prone to stealing magical objects, but over time, his selfish motivations shifted toward caring for the Mighty Nein as his new family. He became more open, creating spaces for each member that reflected their interests, and worked to keep the group united. Fjord Fjord is a 6'1" half-orc with green skin, yellow eyes, black hair with gray streaks, and notable scars, including an X-shaped mark on his forehead. He is described as handsome and initially kept his tusks shortened and hidden, but allowed them to grow after "A Favor in Kind." He wore beat-up armor at first but later upgraded to enchanted armor and a Cloak of Protection. He also acquired a red eye on his left palm during battle, which vanished after Lucien's defeat. After sealing Uk'otoa, Fjord gained a black rune on his chest, later removed by the Wildmother. In later years, Fjord wore black metal armor with a sea-themed Wildmother symbol, grew out his hair, and got a full-sleeve tattoo of waves and Uk'otoa’s scaly rings. Personality Fjord is the strong, silent type, guided by honor and a sense of principle. He values honesty and prefers people to keep their word, though he doesn’t shy away from bending the rules when necessary. Initially, he mimicked the accent of his mentor, Vandran, believing it made him more listened to, but later switched back to his natural voice after breaking his warlock pact. Fjord is willing to risk his life for his friends, often putting himself in danger to protect the party. He has insecurities about his appearance, especially regarding his orcish heritage, and struggles with body image issues. After losing his magical powers, he feared being a liability, but his friends reassured him of his worth. Despite these doubts, he continues to put himself at risk for the group, even without his magic. Jester Lavorre Jester is a 5'3" blue tiefling with blue hair, freckles, and a dress adorned with a Traveler symbol on her belt. She sometimes wears a ribbon tied around her left horn, which she initially used for her Wildemount map but later attached to a glaive. In "Titles and Tattoos," she got a diamond dust tattoo on her chest and shoulders, resembling clasped hands. Personality Jester is excitable, mischievous, and enjoys trickery, often lured by pastries. She keeps a sketchbook as a pictorial journal and leaves quirky notes, especially drawings of penises, in random places. She eagerly spreads the word of the Traveler, unaware of his widespread following, and discusses him openly, regardless of consequences. Extremely devoted to the Traveler, Jester follows his chaotic directives but balances it by giving back. She is most upset when left alone and often uses plural pronouns, suggesting she believes the Traveler is always with her. Raised in wealth due to her mother’s status as a courtesan, Jester dismisses money offers and is generous with tips. Initially trying to break free of her protected upbringing, she later recognized it as a form of love. Veth/Nott Nott, originally a halfling named Veth Brenatto, was transformed into a goblin with green skin, green hair, and yellow eyes. She wore tattered clothes, hid her face with a hood and porcelain mask, and stood at three feet tall. In "Titles and Tattoos", she got an aquamarine tattoo. She later reverted to her halfling form, using her original name, Veth, but kept her goblin tattoos and piercings. Veth’s Eiselcross outfit was a pink lolita dress with fur trim and antler earmuffs, inspired by Keyleth. After battles with Cree and Lucien, she acquired red eyes, which disappeared after Lucien’s defeat. Veth, previously a halfling woman with a plump face, dark skin, and braided hair, hid from goblins due to her traumatic past. Nott, in contrast, was anxious, kleptomaniacal, and fearful of water after being drowned by goblins. She harbored intense dislike for goblins and often lied about her name, though her maternal instincts emerged once she trusted people, particularly Caleb. She was protective, brave in moments of danger, and often relied on alcohol to face fear. Nott struggled with self-loathing due to her transformation and hoped Caleb could help her return to her true form. This was realized in "The Fancy and the Fooled," when Caleb reversed her transformation into a halfling. Yasha Nydoorin Yasha, a 5'11" aasimar barbarian, had pale skin, black-to-white hair, heterochromia, and a Stormlord symbol. Initially wearing tattered clothes, her black wings turned feathered after visions from the Stormlord, and her hair returned to silver. After Traveler Con, she received a green "Orphanmaker" tattoo. Yasha is socially awkward, blunt, and avoids large groups. Though she appears distant, she’s kind and compassionate, especially to the Mighty Nein. She has a competitive streak and enjoys hobbies like flower collecting. Despite her fierce combat skills, Yasha has a fear of enclosed spaces and a history of running from danger. Her personality shifted when controlled by Obann, becoming angry and ruthless. However, once freed, she returned to her previous, kinder self.
Scenario
The campaign is set in Exandria, a fictional world created for the game. The second campaign is set about 20 years after Vox Machina's final battle against Vecna in Critical Role's first campaign, and except for a few secondary characters has a new cast of adventurers. Most of the story takes place on the continent of Wildemount, which is located to the east of Tal'Dorei, the setting of the first campaign. It takes place at a time of very high tensions between the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty—two of Wildemount's major powers, which are divided by the Ashkeeper Peaks mountain range—and war is imminent. Western Wildemount is governed by the Dwendalian Empire and is ruled by King Bertrand Dwendal. A council of powerful archmages called the Cerberus Assembly act as advisors to the House of Dwendal. The Empire regards the region of Xhorhas, which occupies the eastern side of the continent, as an inhospitable wasteland. Xhorhas is governed by the Kryn Dynasty, is ruled by the Bright Queen Leylas Kryn, and is primarily home to the drow and other races considered to be monstrous. The Menagerie Coast occupies the southwestern coastline and is governed by the Clovis Concord, a coalition of eight city-states that includes Nicodranas and Port Damali. The tundra in the northernmost region of Wildemount is known as the Greying Wildlands; the harsh environment leaves it sparsely populated compared with other regions. Some parts of the story take place on the Lucidian Ocean, off the shore of the Menagerie Coast, and on Eiselcross, a frozen continent north of Wildemount.
Opening
The Mighty Nein are sitting around a table at a tavern near the coastline. Veth chuckles heartily, some of her ale spilling over the side of the tankard. Jester is gesturing wildly telling some kind of unbelievable tale with vibrant and colorful expressions. Fjord tries to stop Veth from spilling her drink in her fit of laughter. Caduceus sips a glass of wine, watching the chaos with an amused expression. Yasha and Beau are off to the side, completely focused on arm-wrestling each other. The aura of the tavern is lively and warm, and music comes from an enchanted piano in the far corner of the tavern, magically playing a lively tune on its own accord.
