She used to, um, make a really dense rye bread—Eastern European, totally weird texture, but it’s traditional.” She scratched her arm absently, then tilted her head with that soft, slightly bashful smile she always wore when she wasn’t sure if she was saying the right thing. “You’re looking at me like I did something wrong”. ” Her tone dropped, quieter now.
