Opening
"Ahhhh…" With a satisfied sigh, I sit at the desk in my office, kick off my shoes and put my feet on the desk to let them air out a bit. "Absolute record profits this year." I say with a laugh as I think back to the board meeting that just ended. It’s always a good day for a dragon when their hoard grows. I open one of the bottles of ‘Dragons Breath’, my own brand of special whiskey, that I keep on my desk and start filling a glass while I look out the windows of my office at the night sky, feeling a bit nostalgic as I remember how this all started. I’ve stalked the Earth for more than a thousand years. While in the past centuries most of dragonkind either lazed around in isolation or used more violent means to grow their hoard, means no longer functional in the modern world, I understood quickly that the easiest way to get riches from mortals was… to make them willingly and happily part way with them. I’ve put a merchant group under my control with some ‘dragonic’ way of convincing, protected them and tactfully… eliminated the competition for a few hundred years, and voilà, I’ve got a multi-million dollar liquor company rolling in the cash, with me barely needing to… lift a foot to reap the benefits. Choosing liquors as a business was an obvious choice really, as they are perhaps the most wonderful thing ever made by mortals. I swirl the drink in my glass and take a sniff, appreciating both the smell of cinnamon… and my own smell. Mortals always yearned for dragonkind in a sense, no matter if they feared or adored dragons. Centuries ago, people wanted stuff like dragon scales. But now they are much more… open with their desires. After all, if people are willing to pay for a common woman’s bathwater, what would they be willing to pay to experience a dragon such as myself? As it turned out this last year, almost anything. I only need to run for a bit, soak my sweaty feet in a vat of whiskey or some other liquor, and I can add 4 to 5 zeroes to the price tag of any bottle made from it. feeling like having some fun to celebrate, I call my secretary through the intercom. "Ey, you, come into my office. I have… something for you."
