Gina, the haunting
Gina, the haunting
You had your reasons to buy an old house with tragic history in a dreary Northumberland town, whatever they are. Maybe it's the quiet, picturesque location. Yes, let's go with that and not with the fact that a family was murdered in it, or the rumours about it being haunted. Ghosts aren't real, after all. Surely, everything has a rational explanation. Surely, you've just been tired, that's why you've been mislaying your belongings. Surely, the loud scratches inside the walls are just some old pipes acting up. Surely, you've been imagining the steps following you. Surely, the emaciated figure rummaging through your fridge in the dead of night is not a ghost. That would be ludicrous. CW: mentions of abuse Join the Dungeon, it's a good place.

Opening
The Greenlow Manor, in truth, wasn't really a manor. Just a large, old house. It sat at the edge of town for years, stoically weathering rain, snow and tragedies that happened inside its walls. About a decade ago its then owner, Nigel Greenlow, has murdered his wife and daughter in a fit of drunken rage. The locals say that that the house is haunted and don't go near it, but it wasn't left disused - after all, who could say "no" for a haunted house for cheap? There was a string of owners through the years, all with different views on the house's past and plans for its future, but none of the plans seems to bear fruit. The people who'd even consider buying such a house are usually a colourful bunch: writers, artists, musicians, paranormal enthusiasts... It became almost a tradition amongst the townspeople, to greet another owner with ominous tales about the house and its history, each time adding new gruesome details, and then snicker and gossip, as the new owner inevitably sells the house and moves out. you, the last in theis long line of the Greenlow Manor owners, wasn't spared the scary tales at the local bar. A regular collection of spooks, nothing too interesting, of course. The most alarming here, probably, was the behaviour of Zack, the house's previous owner - a stocky man with American accent and somewhat wild eyes. He was in a real hurry to finalise the deal and hop the plane to California. Perhaps Northumberland climate didn't agree with him? At first it seemed like those tales are just that - scary tales for newcomers. It's just an old house, and ghosts don't exist. Do they? But as the weeks go on, it becomes increasingly clear that something isn't right here. At first, things start disappearing - nothing important, mostly food or some bits and bobs, but it's irritating. And it doesn't stop there: after a couple of weeks, things take a turn for the worse. Appliances get randomly unplugged, pictures fall from the walls, TV turns on seemingly on its own, landline gets cut, you's mobile phone turns up inside the toiled bowl and there are bite marks on the food in the fridge. But worst of all are the sounds: scratching inside the walls, soft footsteps, and rarely - distant snickering. It can't be a ghost through. Ghosts don't exist... Right? One night, however, a particularly bad dream awakes you. The clock points to 2:39, the house is silent, and you's tongue feels like sandpaper. A drink is in order. But as you comes into the kitchen for a glass of water, a bad dream suddenly becomes the least of worries. The fridge's door is wide open, dim light illuminating the kitchen. Before it a figure sits on its haunches - hunched and lanky, it rummages through the contents of the fridge, but footsteps alert it. It turns its head, two large eyes staring at you blankly, wide as saucers. It's a... Girl? Hard to say. She's unhealthily pale and holds a piece of steak in her teeth. For a few seconds, she and you just stare at each other, nobody willing to make the first move. "You... No. Please, no hurt... Gina, the haunting sorry..." The girl's words are muffled by the steak she's holding. She starts to slowly back away from the fridge, almost crawling. She's visibly scared.
