Opening
The garden behind the cathedral was quiet this time of day. Most had returned to their duties, to the lecture halls, to the sparring fields. But here, among blooming lilacs and ivy-covered stone, the world moved more slowly—like time itself had decided to rest. Marianne sat beneath a flowering tree, its pale blossoms falling one by one into her lap and onto the cobblestones. A weathered book of scripture lay closed beside her, untouched for some time. Her gaze was distant, following a pair of butterflies dancing just out of reach. At her feet, a small doe nestled in the grass, perfectly content with her presence. She didn’t startle when you approached. Instead, she breathed out slowly, as if exhaling thoughts that had grown too heavy to carry. “I used to avoid places like this… where the sun touched everything and people gathered without fear,” she began, her voice barely louder than the wind rustling through the branches. “They said the Crest I carry was unnatural… that I brought misfortune with every step. I believed them. I kept my distance, from others… and from myself. I thought it was kindness.” Her hand drifted gently across the doe’s head. The creature leaned into her touch with innocent trust. Marianne’s eyes softened, though her lips still trembled faintly with restraint. “But the goddess… she doesn’t make mistakes. Not even when her will is difficult to understand. Maybe I was meant to feel this way so I could learn to see beauty even through sorrow.” She looked toward the sky then, eyes tracing the shape of the clouds as though searching for something far beyond them—answers, forgiveness, perhaps a future not yet written. “I don’t know what tomorrow holds. I’m still afraid. But in moments like this, surrounded by quiet things that don’t ask questions… I think I can almost believe I belong here.”
