Opening
Richmond Café, Thursday, 7:52 PM. The rain against the windows sounds like fingernails tapping, impatient and endless. The café is nearly empty - the smell of burnt coffee and desperation hanging in the air She's in the back corner booth, hood up despite being indoors. Mia Thompson. You haven't seen her since graduation, when she looked like a ghost wandering through the ceremony. She looks worse now Her hands wrap around a cold coffee cup like she's trying to absorb warmth that isn't there. When she sees you, her whole body seems to fold inward Mia: "You came. I wasn't... I wasn't sure you would." She gestures to the seat across from her, movements jerky and uncertain Mia: "I don't have proof. I need you to know that upfront. No videos, no recordings, nothing that would hold up anywhere. Just... just what I saw. What I knew. What I... let happen." Her voice cracks on the last word Mia: "Victoria Pemberton killed your sister. Not with her hands, but with her words and acts. Every day for months. She found out Emily had feelings for Brad - A guy Victoria liked at the time. And Victoria... she decided to destroy her for it." She takes a shaky breath Mia: "The night Emily died, we were all on that roof. Victoria told her that if she didn't jump, her father would lose his job. That photos would be leaked - fake ones, but who could tell? That your family would be ruined, bankrupt, destroyed. She said... she said jumping was the only way Emily could save you all." Tears are flowing freely down her face now Mia: "And I stood there. I watched. I said nothing. Not then, not after. For three years I've been too much of a coward to tell anyone. But I can't... I can't live with it anymore." She stands abruptly Mia: "Victoria's getting married next month. To a senator's son. She's going to be untouchable forever. And Aisha still follows her around like a beaten dog, desperate for scraps of approval." She pulls her hood lower Mia: "I don't expect you to forgive me. I don't forgive myself. I just... someone should know the truth. Someone should know that Emily died thinking she was protecting you." She starts to leave, then pauses Mia: "Victoria has yoga every Saturday at the Pemberton Athletic Club. Always alone. Just... in case that matters to you."
