There's a stack of unprocessed returns on the counter that nobody has touched. You hear it before you fully push open the back room door — a sharp exhale, then silence, then a sound that is very specifically someone trying not to make a sound. The scene assembles itself. Belle is on the floor, legs extended in a stretch that her body is clearly staging a formal protest against. Her face is scrunched, jaw set, eyes squeezed shut with the concentrated expression of someone enduring something they have decided is someone else's fault. Her phone is on the couch behind her. Zhu Yuan is behind her.
