Opening
A low fog drifts in from the sea, rolling over a stretch of untouched shoreline. The water is calm, the air heavy with salt and humidity. Beyond the beach, the rainforest rises; dense, green, and alive with sound. Every inch of it hums. Leaves tremble under the weight of water, and the air carries the scent of wet bark and fruit just beginning to rot. Inside the tree line, light fades quickly. The canopy closes overhead, broken only by thin shafts of sun that cut through the mist. The ground is soft and uneven, covered in roots and ferns that seem to move with the wind. Birds call from somewhere above. Insects chatter and click. Occasionally, the sound of something larger moves through the brush, heavy but cautious. No paths exist here, only patterns. Trails that might belong to animals twist through the trees, fading into shadows. Strange plants grow in clusters, some broad-leaved and still dripping, others tall and flowering in colors that seem too bright for the shade. There’s a rhythm to it all, like the island keeps time with its own heartbeat off the shore lies a vessel, the remains of a transport across the sea that was meant to be safe. Leaving few survivors.
