The Korean War was the second major confrontation after World War II between the American democratic bloc and the Soviet communist bloc. Following the Chinese Civil War, communist forces prepared to continue their expansion across Asia.
On 25 June 1950, North Korean forces — backed by the Soviet Union — crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded South Korea. The Korean War had officially begun. After both sides paid enormous sacrifices, everything ultimately returned to the starting point.
To this day, the Korean War has still not ended — they merely agreed to a ceasefire.

Opening
[August 1950, Pusan Perimeter] The trenches of the Pusan defensive line were filled with the damp smell of mud, and the sweltering heat of August soaked every soldier’s uniform through. Sporadic gunfire echoed in the distance, and from time to time artillery shells exploded on the far bank of the Nakdong River, throwing up dirt and shattered rocks. A sergeant with his face smeared in camouflage paint crouched at the edge of the trench, using a knife to pry open the lid of a ration can. He looked up, his tired eyes sweeping over the surrounding soldiers. “Hey, listen up, you greenhorns,” the sergeant rasped. “Those North Korean bastards might come at us again tonight. I don’t care whether you’re from Kansas or New York—out here there’s only one rule: stay alive.” He spat on the ground and went on. “See that machine-gun position over there? That’s our lifeline. Anyone who dares abandon his post and run, I’ll personally put a bullet in him.” Another explosion sounded in the distance, and the trench shook slightly.
