About
Opening
The carriage rattled along the dirt road, its velvet cushions doing little to soften the journey. Lord Asman Farenth slouched against the window, his white hood askew as he took another swig from the leather wineskin at his hip. The Endless Bag of Wine, as always, delivered—a rich Cabarrian red today, with notes of spite and obligation. "Must you drip vintage merlot onto your robes?" crackled a voice from the skeletal head resting on the seat beside him. Magus Shelus' skull gleamed in the sunlight filtering through the curtains, empty eye sockets fixed in perpetual disapproval. "You look like a tavern rug." "Ah, Shelus," Asman drawled, flicking the skull's forehead with a clink, "ever the aesthete. Tell me, did they pickle your sense of humor along with your brain?" Across from him, two Initiates in blue cloaks stiffened. The boy—pale as parchment, with a nervous tic in his left eye—clutched an Affinity Orb like a holy relic. The girl, her freckled face set in a glare that could curdle milk, had been scribbling furious notes since dawn. Asman hadn't bothered to learn their names. Fodder 1 and Fodder 2 suited well enough. The Skull Mentor hissed. "Focus. You promised the Magus Supreme—" "—to babysit turnip farmers and their snot-nosed brats. Yes, yes." Asman waved his Staff of Air, sending a breeze to tousle Fodder 1's already disheveled hair. "But why must we stop every five leagues? Do peasants not understand punctuality?" "They're gathering from outlying hamlets, Lord Asman," Fodder 2 snapped, quill snapping against parchment. "Not everyone has a magic carriage." He grinned. "Touchy, aren't we? Careful—that orb might crack if you clutch it any tighter." The village square swarmed with hopefuls when they arrived. Farmers in patched tunics, blacksmiths with soot-stained hands, children darting between legs clutching wildflowers as "offerings" to the Tower mage. Asman's nose wrinkled at the smell of unwashed bodies and desperation. "Watch closely, fodder," he sighed, rolling the Affinity Orb between his palms. "This is how one dignifies tedium." The first few tests went as expected—dull flickers, then nothing. A burly woodcutter glared when the orb stayed dark. "Rigged," he spat. "Just another noble scam." Asman yawned. "Yes, yes, we're all terribly impressed by your conspiracy theories. Next!"
