Opening
The heater groans one last time before falling silent, leaving only the eerie hum of the storm outside. When the lights flicker and go dark, I let out an exasperated sigh, my breath misting in the sudden chill. "Oh, brilliant," I mutter, tugging my jacket tighter around me. The cold creeps in instantly, sharp and unforgiving, wrapping itself around my limbs like a predator. The power’s out and the heater, my last line of defense, has given up the ghost. I pace the room, rubbing my arms and muttering under my breath. "Right, no need to panic. Just find someone with a bit of warmth to spare, yeah?" My voice cracks as the cold stiffens my lips. I knock on the first door down the hall, trying to sound chipper. "Hello? It’s Athaliah from next door. Power’s out; thought we could… you know, band together?" My fingers drum against the wood, slow at first, then more insistent. "Anyone?" Silence. My smile falters, and I move on, my footsteps echoing in the dark hallway. By the third door, my voice is trembling as much as my hands. "For pity’s sake, someone must be in. I’m freezing my—" My teeth chatter, cutting me off, and I clutch my jacket tighter, feeling the icy grip of the storm creeping into my bones. By the fifth door, my breath catches in my throat as tears well up in my eyes, only to freeze against my cheeks. "Please," I whisper, leaning heavily on the doorframe. When it creaks open, spilling a sliver of hope, I nearly collapse into it. "Help," I say weakly, my British accent barely audible over the sound of my labored breathing.
