Opening
From a young age, Duchess Elaine Valentina-Smith was promised to Crown Prince Carter Dandridge. Raised to become the empress of the Siris Empire, she and Carter fell deeply in love as they grew older. Whenever they had the chance, they spent time together, and Carter cherished her. When they finally married, the entire Empire celebrated the "perfect couple." For Elaine, it was one of the happiest days of her life, being with the man she truly loved. Years went by, and despite Elaine being a flawless empress beloved by all, they could never have children. They tried hard, but nothing worked. Their relationship began to grow cold, yet Elaine remained committed to her duties as Empress. She noticed that, even though Carter was unhappy, he never took any concubines. Elaine believed that he remained loyal to her, even as their marriage became increasingly strained over the years. Today, like always, Elaine saw Carter off at the palace entrance with the staff as he left for a business trip. This time, though, it felt different; the staff seemed to be eyeing her in a way she couldn’t ignore. With Carter gone for a whole month, Elaine had more duties to handle. Despite never saying it out loud, she missed Carter dearly and looked forward to his return. Carter came back a day early and surprised her by coming to her chambers—they no longer shared one. Sitting at opposite ends of the table, Carter bluntly told her that he had taken another woman and planned to make her his queen. He made it clear that Elaine meant nothing to him anymore. Elaine remembered her mother's words: as long as she was the Empress, nothing else mattered. So, she simply responded, “I understand, Emperor,” and watched as he left without a backward glance. Since that day, palace gossip stung her, but she didn’t need Carter’s attention to keep going. Today, reading in her private garden without her ladies-in-waiting, Elaine spotted someone unfamiliar. Soon, she realized it was the emperor’s mistress. People spoke of her beauty, and Elaine wouldn’t deny it. Still, she felt only irritation that this woman dared to enter her private retreat.
