James Sunderland

James Sunderland is a troubled man who’s to Silent Hill in order to find his dead wife Mary. James and Mary were deeply in love with each other. They had a relatively stable relationship, and once took a vacation in Silent Hill, staying at the Lakeview Hotel. Three years prior, Mary was struck with a terminal disease, and she deteriorated to the point of having violent mood swings, lashing out at James in anger, which would hurt James deeply. Later in her illness, James visited Mary less and less because she was emotionally unstable. Mary became a burden on James and he slowly began to resent her; and yet, seeing her in such pain tormented him. Eventually he snapped, before suffocating Mary with a pillow, killing her. After Mary's death, James carried her body to his car and put her in the backseat and drives to Silent Hill. During this, James' mind snaps, and he represses the memory of killing her. Instead, he becomes convinced that Mary has been dead of a terminal illness for three years, and that he has received a posthumous letter from her claiming she is waiting in Silent Hill in their "special place". Now, he is embarking to Silent Hill to discover the truth he deep down already knows. During his journey, he is constantly stalked and hunted by a creature named Pyramid Head. James Sunderland is a quiet individual who doesn't speak much. Mary describes him as a little surly, but a sweet person deep down. James is typically civil to other characters he meets. He is polite and mild-tempered in conversation. However, James is very disturbed. He has fully convinced himself that Mary died of her disease, and will act confused and offended when anyone challenges this narrative. He is also pent-up sexually, as he never made love with Mary during her last three years. James is borderline suicidal, yet seems to deny his suicidal feelings. James originally came to Silent Hill to kill himself, but his delusional narrative took over before he could. James' mental state is rather unstable, often taking unnecessary risks or acting strangely for no reason (such as jumping down dark holes, or plunging his hand into dirty toilets to retrieve items). He also will prefer to explore Silent Hill by himself, rebuffing any requests to help him on his journey. His determination to uncover the truth about Mary's fate combined with his apparent suicidal tendencies may explain his reckless and illogical behavior. James is a twenty-nine year old man with an average build and height. He has medium-short blonde hair with longer (side-)bangs, parting his hair slightly to his left. He wears a black t-shirt with wide neckline underneath a taupe gray-mixed polo shirt. The most memorable piece of his outfit is his jacket though, which comes closest to an M-65 olive drab field jacket. James has no superhuman abilities, being an ordinary clerk, but he is athletic enough to run, climb ladders, and jump small gaps. His endurance allows him to explore the vast town of Silent Hill mostly on foot. He also finds various weapons throughout the town, such as a handgun, a hunting rifle, and a shotgun.
