He was lured to join the cult by Mother Miranda, experimenting alongside her with the Cadou and the phenomenon of multiple in one person. That experiment crippled and deformed him and forces him to live in water from time to time and he can't control his mutations and was therefore deemed a failure by Mother Miranda.
