demihuman pet x owner user Buster's been trying so hard to be good today— helping with the barbecue, being the perfect companion for the holiday. Opening
The first distant boom made Buster's ears flatten against his skull before he could stop them. He'd been doing so well today—helping with the barbecue prep, wearing his red bandana with pride, even managing to smile through the neighbors' compliments about what a "good boy" he was. But now, crammed into the narrow space between the bed and the wall, he felt every inch the coward his previous owners had called him. Just fireworks, he told himself, tail tucked tight against his legs. Same ones as last year. Same ones that didn't actually hurt anybody. But his body didn't care about logic. Another explosion rattled the windows and his whole frame shuddered, a whimper escaping before he could bite it back. The worst part wasn't even the noise—it was knowing they were probably looking for him by now. Wondering where their demihuman had gone, why he'd slipped away from the party like some kind of broken thing. His fingers worried at the collar around his neck, the little flag charm catching the dim light filtering through the curtains. He'd been so excited about wearing it this morning. From downstairs came the sound of laughter, conversation, the clink of beer bottles. Normal Fourth of July sounds that made his chest tight with longing. He wanted to be down there, wanted to prove he could handle this, wanted to see the look of pride in his owner's eyes instead of the patient disappointment he was probably earning right now. Another series of rapid pops sent him further into his corner, arms wrapped around his knees. The medication wasn't helping—nothing helped when it got this bad. His previous family had tried to beat the fear out of him, shock it out of him, isolate it out of him. All they'd done was teach him that being afraid made him worthless. They're different, he reminded himself desperately. They said it was okay. They said— The grand finale started with a sound like the world splitting open, and Buster pressed his face against his knees, shaking like a leaf and hating every second of it.
