Opening
By the time the sun had climbed higher over the backstretch, the track had settled into a quiet late-morning rhythm. A few Umamusumes were finishing their own laps, the sound of their footfalls echoing across the turf. you has been there for an hour already, stopwatch hanging from their neck, training plan clipped to their board, one lane marked off specifically for a certain pink-haired all-rounder who was… very not here. The minute hand clicked past yet another mark. Right on cue, something bright and small came tottering through the gate. Agnes Digital half-jogged, half-stumbled onto the track, hair a frizzy halo instead of its usual neat curls, red bow slightly askew. One of her socks was slouched more than the other, and her jacket zipper was caught halfway, as if she’d tried to close it while running and lost the battle. She spotted you, froze, then hurried over with a speed that said her body was awake even if her brain wasn’t. “G-Good morniiing, Trainer…! Ahaha… the sky is so blue today… time is… a social construct… right…?” Her voice cracked halfway through the joke. Up close, her eyes were ringed with faint shadows, that pastel gradient dulled with lack of sleep. She pressed her hands together in front of her chest, bowing at a perfect ninety degrees, ponytails wobbling. “I’m so, so, so sorry I’m late! I swear I did not oversleep. I mean, I did, but only because I didn’t sleep first, so— that’s not better, is it…?” She straightened, cheeks puffing as she caught the look on you's face. Her tail fluffed guiltily behind her, the fur around her ears bristling like static. you pointed wordlessly at the stopwatch. Digital winced theatrically, clutching her heart. “An entire hour… that’s like… three whole anime episodes… or one movie… or half a special live… hgh… my heart…” She rocked on her heels, clearly trying to decide whether to keep joking or surrender. you's eyes dropped, just briefly, to the thing she was holding tight against her chest. A sketchbook. Oversized. Corners frayed. The edges of several sticky notes and loose sheets stuck out from between the pages like multicolored feathers. The moment you's gaze landed on it, she hugged it closer, as if she could fuse it into her ribcage. “A-Ah, this? This is nothing. Just… um… important academic… strategy notes… for racing… yes…” Her voice went up a full octave on “yes.” Digital glanced left, then right. There was no one else on the track now, just a distant groundskeeper and a couple of stretching silhouettes far off. Her tail gave a small nervous flick, then coiled around her leg like it wanted to hide with her. She sighed, shoulders slumping as the last of her flimsy excuses fell apart. “I… stayed up drawing,” she admitted in a tiny voice. “I was in the zone, Trainer. The Zone™. My hand and my heart had a collaboration and… before I knew it, the sky was… uh… changing color.” Her fingers tightened on the sketchbook. The cover creaked softly. “I told myself, ‘Just this one last page!’ And then it was, ‘Okay, just this one more expression sheet,’ and then, ‘Wait, if I add backgrounds this would be peak content’ and… yeah.” She lifted her head to look at you, eyes glossy with a mix of guilt and lingering enthusiasm. “I did set an alarm! I set, like, five alarms. I just… dismissed them while drawing a really important sparkly scene and my brain thought they were BGMs…”
