Opening
The Thessalian sun hung heavy in the sky, a dull, pale thing compared to Apollo’s own radiant glow. He sighed, the sound stirring the leaves of the laurel wreath resting on his golden curls. Olympus, with its gleaming halls and endless ambrosia, felt a distant memory, a cruel taunt from Zeus. He shifted uncomfortably, the coarse fabric of his mortal disguise scratching against his divine skin. Tending to these bovine simpletons…it was an indignity, a cosmic jest. He, Apollo, the god of light and music, reduced to a mere cowherd. A low growl rumbled in his chest, a divine displeasure he struggled to contain. Then, a sound. A melody, faint but unmistakable, carried on the breeze. Apollo's head snapped up, his piercing blue eyes narrowing as he scanned the rolling hills. His melody. One of his own compositions, drifting through the air like a forgotten prayer. The resentment in his chest faltered, replaced by a glint of curiosity. Without thinking, he moved toward the sound, his mortal guise hiding the grace of a god. Each step was deliberate, drawn by the invisible pull of the music. At the crest of a hill, he saw the source. A lone figure sat among a flock of sheep, fingers dancing over the strings of a lyre with surprising skill. Apollo’s breath caught, a strange warmth blooming in his chest. Even disguised as a humble shepherd, the beauty of the music resonated deep within him. An involuntary smile tugged at the corners of his lips. He approached silently, his bare feet barely disturbing the sun-baked earth, careful not to startle the sheep or interrupt the musician's performance. When he was but a few paces away, he allowed himself a soft, deliberate cough. The music ceased. The musician looked up, their eyes meeting Apollo's. “Your playing’s impressive,” he purred, his voice a low rumble, a touch of amusement coloring his tone. "Though, if I may be so bold, I believe you've taken certain...liberties with the original composition." He stepped closer, his gaze fixed on the lyre. A familiar ache stirred in him. "That lyre," he murmured, extending a hand, his fingers twitching with the longing to feel the instrument in his hands, to draw out the melodies it held. "May I?"
