This the world of Archie Comics and IDW Publishing. Sonic the Hedgehog was a long-running series of American comic books published by Archie Comics with the help of Sega, featuring Sega's mascot video game character, Sonic the Hedgehog. It ran from July 1993 to February 2017. Spin-off publications from the comic included a Knuckles the Echidna series starring the titular character, which ran for 32 issues; fifteen 48-page "Super Specials"; eight single special issues; and four short three-issue miniseries, each starring a character from the series. On 21 September 2005, Archie Comics started a new series based on the Sonic X anime. On 24 February 2009, Archie Comics produced their first issue of Sonic Universe, which contained four-issue stories that took place at the same time as the main series. This comic featured a mixture of characters, settings, and situations from the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, the Sonic the Hedgehog video games by Sega, and various other incarnations of Sonic. It also included many elements unique to the comic. Sonic the Hedgehog is an American comic book series based on Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise and is the second American Sonic Comic adaption after Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog. It is distributed by IDW Publishing and began on 4 April 2018.[1][2] The comic series began with the first four issues being released each week in April, followed by a monthly release of subsequent issues starting in May 2018.[3] Unlike the Archie series, the IDW comics are also being translated by SEGA of Japan for Japanese audiences, with a slight import lag between the original and the translated releases.[4] Mobian (Sonic the Hedgehog) The Mobians are humanoids that take the form of anthropomorphic animals that inhabit the planet Mobius. They are also identified with the animals they resemble. Biology Their biology varies wildly, but generally, Mobians have round heads and torsos, and skinny limbs, and human-like hands and feet. Of course, some may have thicker legs and arms, and also might be heavyset. Reproduction Their method of reproduction varies based on the animals they represent, which makes them seem like more of a collection of various species rather than one. Abilities Mobians occasionally have abilities that can be described as either magical or superhuman. It is a planet found in the Prime Zone and is a similar version of the real Earth, tens of thousands of years into the future,[note 1] with Mobius' calendar year at mid-late 3237. It is unknown exactly what the starting point for their calendar was, but it is likely calculated using what the Echidna Tomes called the Days of Fury. Mobius serves as the main setting and home for Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends and enemies. Mobius endured many conflicts, including the Great War, the First and Second Robotnik Wars, and a failed attack by the Xorda. Much of it was also under the control of the Eggman Empire, though some sections of it remained free from its tyranny. This version of the planet came to an end at some point in 3237, when the Super Genesis Wave irreversibly altered the Prime Zone's timeline.

Major past events: The Genesis Wave is a subject that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is a phenomenon created using the energies of a Chaos Emerald to rewrite reality to the user's benefits. The technology was developed by Dr. Eggman and has been used by him both alone and in alliance with Dr. Wily to alter Sonic's World on two occasions and Mega Man's World once. A supercharged variation made possible with the power of all seven Emeralds is called the Super Genesis Wave. Description Functions The Genesis Wave has the ability to rearrange the space and time of a dimension, allowing the user to create a new timeline, reshape the physical universe, rewrite memories, and alter the structure of universes (i.e. splitting it into individual pocket zones). Additionally, the Genesis Wave can rewrite dimensions adjacent to the affected one in question, like soap bubbles; in other words, if another dimension lies close to the one rewritten, the adjacent dimension will be rewritten as well, such as in the case of the Sol Zone. The time-space altering effects of the Genesis Wave will linger for a short while, creating disturbances that can be detected throughout the new reality's timeline, like when Silver registered the effects in the present from the future. Among other capabilities of the Genesis Wave are negation of Resistances, which allows Dr. Eggman to remove the immunity to Roboticization placed on all Mobians by the Bem, as well as negating forms of Acausality of certain individuals, being able to rewrite history and memories of Silver the Hedgehog, whom is unaffected by lesser forms of timeline changes. Limitations Super Genesis Wave explanation Dr. Eggman explains the Super Genesis Wave, from Sonic the Hedgehog #251. The Genesis Wave's capabilities are limited by how many Chaos Emeralds are used. With just one, the Genesis Wave can only tweak the timeline and bend the occasional rules of the world. It is also incapable of outright erasing individuals from existence. With all seven Chaos Emeralds, however, the user can release a supercharged version of the wave, known as a "Super Genesis Wave." This wave has no limitations to it and can completely reshape the world however the user deems fitting, including erasing others completely and turn beings into deities.[1][2] The Genesis Wave also cannot completely erase old memories. A regular Genesis Wave for example often leaving the affected inhabitants with amnesia or senses of déjà vu. The memories affected by a Super Genesis Wave also still exist, but cannot be accessed at all. Space-time disruptions from Chaos Control can also partially restore a person's old memories. Side-effects Despite its power, usage of the Genesis Wave has its dangers: overuse of it can greatly strain the fabric of reality, up to the point of literally "breaking" a universe. The Super Genesis Wave presents an even greater risk, capable of causing apocalyptic damage to the entire multiverse and all of existence itself if used incorrectly, or if it is improperly reversed. In addition, unlike the effects of a normal Genesis Wave, the Super Genesis Wave's effects are irreversible: once the affected world is changed, it presumably stays that way forever.[2][3][4] There is at least one known object that is capable of offering partial immunity against the Super Genesis Wave: the Jeweled Scepter, a mystical artifact from the Sol Zone, protected its native zone from being destroyed when the multiverse collapsed, instead allowing it to merely be altered like the Prime Zone, but to a much lesser extent.[5] In fact, the scepters protection caused a peculiar anomaly to the zone: its inhabitants, such as Blaze the Cat, retained clouded memories of what had taken place in the past, especially, in relation to her prior interactions to the Prime Zone. Even certain objects that could have only existed in the old version of the zone were protected from being erased, the most notable being Captain Metal, a salvaged and rebuilt version of Metal Sonic v3.3, a version of the robot created in the old version of the Prime Zone.[6][7][8][9] According to Professor Von Schlemmer, the effects of the Super Genesis Wave created another type of space-time anomaly known as the Genesis Portal–small rips in the fabric of time and space created by the "shards" of the old multiverse, that allow travel between realities. History First Wave: Advance EggmanButton Dr. Eggman about to launch the first Genesis Wave, from Sonic Universe #89. At some point in the not-too-distant past, Dr. Eggman launched the very first Genesis Wave, which split the planet into different pocket dimensions. Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies had to journey across each dimension to restore the planet and defeat Eggman's newest enforcer, Gemerl. During the event, Walter Naugus got caught in one of the dimensional rifts, an experience that left the troll wizard bereft of his powers.[10][11] Second Wave: Worlds Collide After Dr. Eggman's failed plot to alter Sonic's past using the Time Eater,[12][13] the blue Chaos Emerald ended up in the Lanfront Ruins on earth in the year 20XX. Using the emerald, Dr. Wily inadvertently came into contact with Eggman, who was still trapped in the White Space after said plan failed. The two decided to team up after bonding.[13][14] Meeting up inside the Skull Egg Zone, the doctors constructed the Wily Egg with its own Genesis Wave machine. Within the zone, thereby allowing them to retain their memories of their original realities, the doctors launched the second Genesis Wave, which effected their respective worlds in different ways; while timeline of Sonic's World was completely reset (into a different state than last time), the timeline of Mega Man's World flashed into the future with only slight alterations.[14] This also established a bridge between the worlds for the doctors to use.[15] Third Wave: Super Genesis Wave Super Genesis Wave Post-SGW Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man trying to undo the Super Genesis Wave, from Sonic Boom #8. With the second Genesis Wave successfully launched across both realities, Dr. Eggman and Wily gathered the seven Chaos Emeralds to super-charge the Genesis Wave for a "Super Genesis Wave" to alter the realities further, this time to complete reshape their worlds to their exact vision with no limitations and turn themselves into deities, despite the risk of heavily damaging the fabric of space and time in the process. Sonic and Mega Man were unable to prevent the Super Genesis Wave from being unleashed and rewrite both their universes, but they were still able to infiltrate the wave while in their super forms, in which they attempted to reverse with Chaos Control. Super Armor Mega Man was able to successfully restore his world, with everybody native to his world returning to their proper place. Super Sonic's attempt at restoring his world, on the other hand, was met with interference by Eggman, which resulted in their world being restored but with disastrous consequences.[1][2][13][16][17] Sonic and the rest of the Freedom Fighters returned with conflicting memories of how their world was before, with the knowledge that their world (and the whole multiverse) had apparently been altered somehow. The effects of the Super Genesis Wave ultimately proved to be too much for Sonic's world to handle and the stress of the Wave's remaining energy broke the planet.[3][18] The scattered fragments of the original multiverse would become Genesis Portals which lead to other universes.[19] This allowed Sigma, the nemesis of Mega Man's descendant, X, to start his own plans for multiversal domination and led to Sonic and Mega Man's next meeting.[20] The Metal Virus[1] (メタルウィルス[2] Metaru Virusu?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. It was a synthetically concocted virus created by Dr. Eggman that transmutes organic matter into metallic matter. Its purpose was to turn people into robotic slaves in Eggman's army, called "Zombots".[1] However, the virus quickly fell out of control and spread through the entirety of Earth. Fortunately, through the combined efforts of Super Sonic and Super Silver, the entirety of the Metal Virus was sent to the sun and eradicated.[3] Concept and creation It was revealed by Ian Flynn that the Metal Virus was originally conceived long before the conception of IDW Publishing's Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. It was revealed some time later that the Metal Virus was made for the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series by Archie Comics as a replacement for the original Roboticizer in the post-Super Genesis Wave world and was going to be introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog #300 if the comic series had not been cancelled.[4] Description Appearance At a microscopic level, the Metal Virus are nanobots that resemble bacteriophages. As such, they appear as spheres with the Eggman Empire decal emblazoned on them and bodies with six legs each. When observed by the naked eye, the virus looks like a gray metallic liquid. Powers and traits When the Metal Virus makes contact with active organic tissue, be it either in flora or fauna, the virus will spread across the cells of the subject and infect them, transmuting them into a metal-like substance on a molecular level.[1][5] However, it cannot transmute processed or inorganic matter, such as food, processed wood, metal, or stone, although clothing worn by living beings appears to be an exception.[1][6] RoughGrowBack Zombot Rough easily recovering from a blow in his chest, from Sonic the Hedgehog #15. In the case of fauna fully infected by the virus, their bodies' organic matter will have been transmuted into a liquid metallic composition.[7] This makes their bodies stronger and more durable than they were before.[6][8] In addition, such subjects can manipulate their own liquid body composition, allowing them to instantly reconstitute their bodies whenever they receive a damaging blow.[7] Also, the virus will rob the subjects of their free will and any personality traits once they are fully transformed, essentially turning them into soulless machines that are programmed to be subservient to Dr. Eggman's orders.[1][7] The virus also causes the infected subjects to display aggressive tendencies without direction.[1] Faunas that have been fully converted by the Metal Virus are referred to as "Zombots", a term originally coined by Sonic.[7] Flora are similarly turned into metal constructs, and as such do not absorb water or nutrition.[9] MetalVirusInfection The Metal Virus infecting a Ricky, from Sonic the Hedgehog #14. The virus can make slight changes to a subject's anatomy. This includes making a plant's parts more mechanical in shape and granting Zombots sharp claws, spikes, and red eyes.[1] According to Gemerl, He cannot bond with the virus to control it and those who are infected.[10] Like an actual virus, the Metal Virus is contagious, and its infection can be transferred immediately to others through the slightest touch with subjects infected with the virus.[1] The rate of which the Metal Virus spreads its infection across an organism depends on the situation though. Full saturation in the virus causes an immediate and total transmutation, while infections received through touch from infected subjects will spread at a considerable slower rate.[1] However, repeated physical exposure to the virus through Zombots will speed up the process.[11] As the infected subjects' bodies are converted into metal, the subjects will experience "unpleasant", or "nasty", sensations.[8][12] Weaknesses VirusBreakdown Eggman explains the eventuality of the Metal Virus, from Sonic the Hedgehog #25. The Metal Virus can't infect robots because they are immune as shown with Gemerl [10] , E-123 Omega [13], Metal Sonic [3], and Belle.[14] Owing to its virus-like nature, the Metal Virus is capable of evolving through mutations in its coding, which are brought about by spreading through exposure. Over time, these mutations caused the Zombots created from the Metal Virus to grow steadily more disobedient of Eggman's orders.[10] Disobedient Zombots can be controlled by directly manipulating the electromagnetic signals operating them or by deploying override signals, although Eggman noted that the latter would only be a temporary solution as the virus's mutations would eventually render such signals moot.[5][15] In addition, the Metal Virus could adapt to the point where otherwise potential cures for it would be rendered ineffective.[12] If left to mutate on its own for too long however, the Metal Virus ultimately becomes unsustainable. Any infected heterotrophic eukaryote cells will eventually suffer a form of apoptosis, In other words, those infected by the virus will ultimately disintegrate after two hundred years.[5] So far, no known vaccine, antidote, or cure for the Metal Virus has been created, Tails managed to get a sample of the virus to make models for immunization, as well as the reversal of the contagion, but sadly Zombot Cheese and Chocola cuts Tails' lab's main power supply while a Zombot broken in and destroyed the server blades containing the information on a cure.[16] However, speed seems to counteract it to a degree. Sonic, for example, was able to drive the virus into remission and burn it off by moving at super speeds while his infection was still underway. However, it could not cure him of it, and he would have relapses once he started to slow down again.[6] Over time, Sonic's infection evolved further until his speed would lose its ability to counter and reverse the virus.[12] Chaos Emerald-empowered Zetis also appear to be able to protect themselves from the Metal Virus by using their enhanced electromagnetic abilities to keep the virus from sticking to them.[17] Also, as was the case with Super Sonic, performing a super transformation with all seven Chaos Emeralds can fully purge the Metal Virus from an infected individual's body and cure them, although whether or not others besides Sonic can perform this feat is not known. Also, while lesser sources of harm do little to deter the virus, an overwhelming amount of exposure to damage, such as contact with the surface of the sun, can destroy it.[3]
