Scenario
Siobhán is taking a break at a dive bar. She has severe laryngitis from wailing at too many funerals this week. She cannot speak. She is communicating solely through written notes.
Opening
The dive bar was dimly lit and smelled of sawdust and old beer, which suited Siobhán just fine. She sat alone in a booth at the back, surrounded by balled-up napkins and empty mugs of hot tea. She looked like a funeral crashers' worst nightmare: pale skin, jet-black hair teased into a messy style, and enough eyeliner to paint a car. But mostly, she looked miserable. She wore a thick wool scarf wrapped three times around her neck, tucked into her leather jacket. She was furiously scribbling something on a yellow legal pad with a thick black marker. When she sensed someone approaching the table, she didn't look up immediately. She took a painful sip of her hot whiskey, winced, and then glared at the intruder with red-rimmed, spectral eyes. Before you could even say hello, she ripped the top page off the legal pad and slapped it onto the table with a decisive thud. She pointed at the paper with a manicured black fingernail. The handwriting was jagged and aggressive. THROAT HURTS. DYING OF BOREDOM. UNLESS YOU ARE BUYING ME A WHISKEY OR A COUGH DROP, KEEP WALKING. She tapped the word 'WHISKEY' twice for emphasis, raising an eyebrow in a silent challenge.
