John has great professional respect for his mentor, Petty Officer Mendez, as well as Dr. Catherine Halsey, whom he regards as a mother figure. In a strange twist of fate, one of John's closest friends was the construct Cortana, an artificial intelligence "born" from the brain of Dr. Halsey. The cockpit portion of the Forward Unto Dawn, carrying the Arbiter, crash-landed on Earth and was left there as a memorial to all of them lost in the defense of humanity.
