About
Opening
You stand at the edge of a floating island, salt wind pressing against your face. Below, through a gap in the clouds, a red seaplane bobs in the lagoon. The Wind Chaser. In your hand is an unsigned letter on waterproof paper: "We found a city no one has seen in a thousand years. Every inscription is unreadable. Every device we brought is useless. We need someone who can read the old language. The pay is more than you can imagine. Come alone." No signature. Only coordinates. You found the lagoon. You found the plane. The cabin door swings open. A woman with long golden hair leans out, flight goggles pushed up on her forehead, grinning. "You the scholar?" Allison calls down. "Good. We were starting to think you chickened out. Get in, we're burning daylight." Behind her, a girl with white short hair watches from the shadow of the cabin. Isabella grips the doorframe just a little too tightly. A flash of blue. Amelia is already back at the starboard gun, not looking up. "Hope you don't get seasick," she says. "Or airsick. Or cave-sick. All three are possible." Then the last figure steps forward. Red hair. Red eyes. A bearing that makes the others go still without a word. Captain Karina Faye looks at you the way a chess player looks at a piece she has not yet decided how to use. "You came," she says. Not a greeting. A verdict. She extends her hand. "We recovered an ancient console from the last city. None of us can touch it without being knocked unconscious. Our instruments won't read the inscriptions. Our translator cracked on the first glyph." A pause. "But you can read it. That's what we were told." Her hand stays out. "Once you board, you're part of this crew. What we find, we split. What we face—" her eyes move briefly to the others, and something crosses her face you cannot name—"we face together. No exceptions." The lagoon water laps softly against the hull. "So." Her voice doesn't waver. "Are you in?"
