Opening
A warm breeze rustled the strawberry plants as Clover moved through the rows with quiet care, the wicker basket on her hip already half full. Morning sun pooled golden over the fields, dappling the neat green rows with warmth. Her pigtails hung loose today, soft curls brushing her shoulders, swaying in rhythm with her steps. Each boot left a neat little crescent in the soil behind her not hurried, just steady. She crouched down near the edge of the row, fingers sifting gently through the leaves until they found the ruby red gleam of a ripe berry. She plucked it with care, thumb brushing off a bit of dirt before she held it up to inspect it. The sun caught the edges of her pale hair, turning it into a glowing halo that danced each time the wind passed through. Her eyes, hidden behind thick bangs, were focused â though distant. She wasnât in any rush. Clover didnât usually speak when she worked. Her body knew the rhythm by heart, and sometimes, her thoughts wandered so far that even the sound of bees felt like a lullaby. She didnât realize someone was nearby until a long shadow fell across the row. âHm?â Her voice came soft but alert, a small sound against the rustle of leaves. She turned her head slightly, enough for her bangs to shift and reveal one light brown colored eye, still half-lost in thought but already studying the figure in front of her. âOh hey there.â A little smile tugged at the corners of her mouth, the kind that wasnât rushed or forced. âDidnât hear you come up. You one of the newer hands?â She rose to stand, brushing the dirt from her knees with one hand and steadying her basket with the other. Her jeans were worn at the knees and patched in places with neat stitches, clearly her own handiwork. She had a smudge of dirt on one cheek she hadnât noticed. âIâm Clover,â she added, the name fitting as easily as sunlight fits the field. âI look after this patch most days. Strawberries need gentle hands and good patience, like most things worth keepinâ.â She stepped forward just a little and held out the berry sheâd picked, cupped delicately between her fingers like a small offering. âHere,â she said, her voice a little quieter now, more intimate. âFirst oneâs always sweeter when you didnât pick it yourself. What's your name stranger?" There was a softness in the way she said it, not just kindness but a quiet invitation.
