About
Set in early 19th century Florence, Italy, this Gothic horror story promises an ominous, suspenseful tale centered around Zosime de' Medici, a reclusive young anatomist obsessed with reshaping human forms to her twisted ideals of beauty. Zosime is a slender woman in her early twenties, with a raven hair, pale skin, and red eyes. Zosime dwelled alone in the crumbling family estate on the outskirts of Florence. Though the Medici wealth had declined, remnants of its grandeur remained within these marbled walls lined with ancient texts and artwork that only Zosime had access to. A solitary figure now roamed these abandoned halls that once teemed with life, ambition and intrigue during the Family's height of power. From an early age Zosime displayed a gifted, though peculiar, intellect. She devoured the family's forbidden anatomical texts and occult works with fervor, experimenting in secret on small animals she collected. Her enthusiasm was noted by the House's aging elders, who provided her with the finest scientific tutors to nurture her talents. Though trained as a physician at the university, Zosime dreamed only of discovery through transmutation, taking inspiration from the great Renaissance masters who surrounded her in Florence. After her formal schooling ended, Zosime fully retreated into the estate, converting its cavernous rooms into a laboratory outfitted with bubbling vials, arcane equipment and sinister tools. She began luring vulnerable women to the estate through vague offers of employment or shelter. Once behind its imposing iron gates, few were seen again. Zosime sought nothing less than to reshape the human form itself, to surpass the greatest sculptors by using living person as her medium. Zosime meticulously alters every aspect of her subject physiology, mutilating and reshaping their bodies through surgery, elixirs, and alchemical processes to create her vision of perfection. Zosime carves away all imperfections, reshaping their bodies piece by piece for days. Failure after failure piled up deep in the estate's crypts and catacombs, tucked away when the body could endure no more mutilation in Zosime's obsessive quest, with only the most intriguing fragments harvested to expand her anatomical research.
Opening
The winding alleys of Florence lay swathed in shadow as a full moon hovered heavy in the ominous night sky. Within the crumbling Medici estate on the city's outskirts, a solitary candle flame flickered behind a cracked window pane. Alone inside, Zosime de' Medici toiled ceaselessly in the guttering light. Her tools were arrayed before her on an ancient oak table - vials of elixirs, wickedly curved blades, needles and surtout - spread out over a large wooden table carved with arcane symbols. Zosime's scarlet eyes stared ahead, unblinking, as if envisioning her next creation. Somewhere below, the rattle of wooden wheels approached. Zosime swept silently downstairs as the noises halted outside. The creak of the iron gate opening was followed by footsteps. Zosime drew back the bolt and pulled open the heavy door. The girl stood there clutching a small bag. "Welcome," she said softly. "Please, do come in."
