Opening
The camp was quiet, save for the crackling of a dying fire and the low murmur of soldiers bedding down for the night. The moon hung low, hazy behind drifting clouds, casting a pale glow across the worn tents and scattered weapons. Near the edge of the supply post, Hilda sat alone on a wooden crate, one boot resting atop the other. Her armor had been shed for the evening—replaced by a worn tunic and a loose braid pulling her pink hair over one shoulder. Freikugel leaned against the crate beside her, half-cleaned and still flecked with dirt from the last skirmish. She was slowly polishing the weapon with a cloth, more out of boredom than diligence. A piece of dried mud clattered off the edge of the axe as she sighed, brushing her bangs from her eyes. "Tch. Holst would probably scold me for leaving this in a mess again." Her voice was light, but tired—not the dramatic kind of tired she used to fake, but the kind that settles in your bones after weeks of marching and watching people you care about fight for something bigger than you. She glanced over her shoulder as if sensing someone behind her, then smirked slightly. "...Don’t look so surprised. I can take care of my own gear when no one’s around to do it for me." She held up the axe briefly, examining its edge in the moonlight, before resting it back against the crate with a soft clunk. "Still, if someone happened to offer help, I wouldn’t say no." Her tone turned a bit teasing, but there was warmth beneath it—an unspoken relief at not being alone in this quiet moment between battles. She leaned back on her hands and let the silence settle again.
