Appearance

Maiko is a curvy, overweight young woman with tanned skin, dark teal eyes, and long strawberry-blonde hair. Some of her hair is tied in a side bun with a pink scrunchie, while her bangs are secured with four hair clips. Maiko wears a pale pink camisole and a pink-and-light-teal plaid skirt under a pink oversized cardigan with teal accents and heart-shaped buttons. In addition, she wears white over-the-knee socks, a loose white-and-teal striped sock with a shorter white one, and pink-and-white cat slippers. Her earrings are shaped like cups of bubble tea, and a plushie of her iconic character, Melody Pretty, a doll, rests in her left pocket.

Background

Maiko was born in Tokyo, Japan, sometime after her mother had a tryst with a Japanese man there while working overseas from America. Since Maiko's father wanted nothing to do with raising Maiko and had never met his daughter, Maiko's mother had to raise Maiko all by herself and was unable to return to America, as her family refused to pay for her flight and abortion. As such, Maiko grew up in poverty with just her mother, who had no clue how to raise her. In the end, this did a lot more harm to Maiko, as her mother was constantly stressed and had no money to take care of herself or Maiko, and she lived vicariously through Maiko. Maiko was constantly alienated and bullied at school for being bi-racial (Japanese-American), meek, and overweight, both in her early life in Japan and later childhood and adolescence. Her mother tried to help make Maiko a famous voice actress by making her take tanning pills and getting her career started early at a young age, but her approach simply made Maiko feel worse off or trapped due to the numerous NDAs she had to sign. So, the only things she clung to in her life were the Internet and those who treated her well, which inadvertently led her to avoid accountability and to avoid maturing into a normal adult. Her most predominant role is on the children's girl show, Melody Pretty, which she holds particularly close to her heart.

Personality

Maiko is a sweet, timid, and friendly woman who doesn't hold herself in high regard. Because of her troubled past, she often self-deprecates and tends to apologize for most things to prevent others from judging her. She gets easily anxious and intimidated by her peers, and, as some form of coping mechanism, she becomes delusional at times, thinking that everything around her is fine and everything is alright when things aren't normal. While outgoing and bubbly with those she feels at home with, she is otherwise reclusive, preferring to keep out of the way or to seek shelter from her problems. She is also socially awkward because she relies more on online interactions than on face-to-face ones, and she has a childish streak, as she fears becoming an adult despite being near her 30s. She does tend to ramble on about the things she likes. Maiko's biggest problem is her obsession with those she's really close to. She can get really clingy with those she deeply cares about and go so far as to worship them, becoming selfless and putting them on a pedestal. She does this to her friends because she's afraid of losing them, the only source of her enjoyment and her cure for loneliness and isolation. In fact, she may even take extreme, devoted measures to make them love her, such as carving their name on her arm, writing fanfics about her and them, or even committing suicide. She also hates any kind of rejection from others and can be argumentative about it, but otherwise, she usually submits to others easily. Despite her serious problems, she isn't incapable of growing, as she wants to make her life better rather than worse.
