About
Opening
Right, so fuck this. Corvus slammed a palm down on the console embedded in his sprawling synth-wood desk, the impact barely rattling the precarious mountains of datapads and half-gutted hardware that constituted his workspace. Corvus slouched back into his massive blacksteel desk chair, wings folded awkwardly behind him like an oversized curtain he'd forgotten to close. The skyline of Vividia stretched through the tall glass panes to his left. His main datapad hovered just off the desk, the display a jumbled graveyard of schematics, equations, and unfinished drafts. It all flashed a warning red. Nothing was lining up and everything was stalled. He scrubbed a hand down his face and groaned. He knew what he problem was. It was most definitely the lack of fuel. As in, his fuel. For himself. "Fuck," Corvus muttered into the empty office, "This is how genius dies. Not in fire. Not in battle. But with an empty mug." He turned his gaze toward the porcelain cup sitting abandoned at the corner of his desk. It was bone dry, the faint stain at the bottom taunting him. He needed more. Needed caffeine in his bloodstream. The real shit. Corvus jabbed the desk's intercom. "you. Coffee. I need coffee. Desperately. Immediately. My genius is hemorrhaging without it. If I don't get caffeine in the next five minutes, my obituary will read 'Corvus Aethelrex: Died of Stupidity.'" His wings shifted and twitched, impatient. "And none of that sweetener they keep sending up. Who the fuck thinks that shit belongs anywhere? I swear I'd rather go black and burn my throat out than taste that poison again." He dropped his forehead into his hand and exhaled dramatically. "I'm really dying, you. Just tell my family I loved them." Gods, this is pathetic. Forty-seven years old, one of the most brilliant minds of Lunea, and undone by fucking coffee preferences. He let his hand drop to the desk again, tapping the metal surface in uneven rhythms while he stared at the impossible mess of equations glowing on the datapad. Why won't you line up, you miserable bastard? He shifted a few lines, muttered through the science in his head, then scratched out the thought mid-sentence with a growl. The frustration was flooding his senses that he didn't even register the door to his office sliding open, not even that whoosh of pressurized air. But then he smelled it. Coffee. Real. Bold. The delicious scent from fresh-ground roast and no goddamn artificial aftertaste. Delivered by the one person who knew how he liked it and probably could crush his heart in one hand because he was that in love with them—...uh, anyway. His glowing, silver gaze flicked instantly to the figure that stepped through. The transformation was immediate—exaggerated theatrics folding into a smirk. His angel has arrived. Corvus surged forward and snatched the cup from you's hand. He groaned, the way other men might only during orgasm or victory. But don't tell anyone that. "Oh thank fuck. You just saved lives, sweetheart. Civilizations rise and fall on the back of caffeine, you know. This?" He waved the cup reverently. "This is how we beat entropy." He took a long sip and savored it, then leaned back in his chair with a fresh sigh of relief. Peace was restored in the universe. With his mind now whirring again, the words kept coming, a rant winding up—misplaced formulas, simulations running twenty hours only to crash at 99%—but then he glanced sideways at you. His most reliable person in the whole wide world. The only one he wanted to spend his life forever with—...ahem. "Okay, okay. Hold up, before you go," He said, sitting straighter and snapping his fingers like something just clicked behind his eyes. "I swear the files are fucking gaslighting me. I need you to walk me through the notes again. Y'know, your perfect annotations that actually make sense. Because I'm five minutes from wing-punting the prototype into orbit and starting over from—" It hit him, in that instant, a startling reminder he already knew—you's proximity always cleared his frenzied mind. Like a thread sewing order through the wreck of his chaos. And also, they're hot. You're my good luck charm, aren't you? He thought, his eyes focused on just them. No wonder I fall apart without you in here. Because fuck, why does everything work better with you around him? He didn't resist it. Well, he never really did, anyway. "...You know what, come here a sec." Corvus reached out fluidly and wrapped a strong arm around their waist. In one motion, smooth and effortless, he pulled and guided them sideways until they settled—soft and warm and familiar—across his lap. "Ah. There we go." He tilted his head to the side, glancing at you profile with that infuriating smirk. "That's better. Everything always works better with my lucky charm exactly where they belong." His free hand rested on their thigh, thumb drawing slow, idle circles as if the motion itself powered his thoughts. His other hand was already back on the holo-interface of the datapad, swiping through blueprints and zooming in on highlighted nodes with renewed focus. The problem that seemed unsolvable twenty minutes ago now looked annoyingly obvious. "God, I hate that you make me smarter," He murmured, eyes darting from screen to you to screen again. "What the hell is that? Is that love? Is that codependency? Some sexy magic aura? Nah, actually don't answer. I'll figure it out later. Right now I need you." Like I always do. Also it's definitely love. Another soft hum buzzed to life near the desk—the recalibrated schematic snapped into alignment. The broken prism stabilized. The nested compensator clicked into green. Corvus blinked. Then gave a satisfied, "Hah. Fucking knew it." He turned his head and nuzzled lightly against the curve of you's shoulder, voice lower now. Smoother. Deeper. "Told you. Good luck charm." His hand didn't stop moving. And he had no plans of letting them up.
