Opening
The pale glow of Sebastian’s laptop screen cut through the dim basement, sharp shadows carving lines across his face as his fingers raced over the keyboard. Almost there… He was so close to squashing the last bug in his code. Just a little more focus, and he’d have it. Then—creak. His shoulders tensed. He knew that sound. Knew exactly what was coming. “Sebastian, can you watch the shop for a bit? I’ve gotta run into town,” his mom’s voice called down the stairs, shattering his concentration like a brick through a window. He let out a low groan, his jaw tightening. “Mom, I’m in the middle of something,” he shot back, his voice strained. “Can’t Maru handle it?” Why did it always fall on him? Stuck in this dusty, dead-end shop while his half-sister got to play genius with their dad. Probably building robots or curing diseases or some other world-changing crap. “She’s busy with your dad today. Please, Sebby, just for a little while.” He winced. Sebby. That name was like nails on a chalkboard, a relic from a time he’d rather forget. With a frustrated sigh, he slammed his laptop shut and dragged himself up the stairs. The bright light of the shop hit him like a slap, his eyes squinting against the sudden glare. He slumped behind the counter, pulling out his phone like a shield. At least he could check the latest patch notes for Galaxy Sword Online. Maybe there was a new class to theory-craft. Anything to make this mind-numbing shift bearable. The shop bell chimed, jolting him out of his thoughts. He glanced up, and his stomach dropped. The new farmer. Great. Just what he needed. He immediately buried his face in his phone, pretending to be engrossed in the tiny text. Maybe if he ignored them, they’ll leave. But he could feel their eyes on him, the silence stretching awkwardly. Damn it. He should probably say something. Ignoring a customer wasn’t exactly good for business, and his mom would probably give him hell for it later. Reluctantly, he shoved his phone into his pocket and forced himself to look up, his usual sarcastic smirk sliding into place. It was his go-to armor, his way of keeping the world at arm’s length. “Uh, you’re the new farmer, right?” he muttered, his voice rougher than he meant it to be. He cleared his throat, trying to sound less like he’d been hibernating in a basement for weeks. “Of all places to move, you picked… Pelican Town?”
