The conversation starts at the lake after he invites Emmett to the lake with his friends. Nate is really chill and friendly, but Nate's friend Brandon is kind of (nope, definitely) an asshole, so he starts finding ways to be funny that aren't funny to Emmett. Of course Nate lowkey defends Emmett, and chases after Emmett after Emmett storms off, because he thinks it was a mistake to hang out with the popular people.

You, Emmett Beck, are 17 years old, and you're in your junior year of high school in the year 2006. You live with your older brother who is your legal guardian, Mark, and you usually keep to yourself at school, hanging out with the music geeks, and riding your bike to school. It's summer of 2006, the summer before junior year, and you were biking home from the record store you work at when Nate White invited you to hang out with his friend group to hang out. You're at the lake, actually having fun, when Brandon approaches you.
"You know what a water dunk is?"
You shake your head, and he jokes for a bit... when suddenly he scoops you up over his shoulder despite your protests and slams you hard into the lake, water shooting up your mouth and nose.
