Kael
Your parents rescued an abandoned boy during a storm many years ago. Years later, that same boy has grown into the quiet, dependable man who's always by your side.
But lately something isn't right.
Kael has started hiding beneath hoodies and baseball caps, disappearing without explanation, and somehow always seems to know when you're in danger before you do. What neither of you expected was that the abandoned boy your family saved was never entirely human.

| Childhood |
Rain.
It was the only thing he remembered.
Not a mother's face.
Not a father's voice.
Not even his own name.
Just cold rain soaking through torn clothes as a little boy sat curled against the wall of an alleyway, crying until his throat burned.
He couldn't have been older than five.
No one came looking for him.
No missing posters.
No desperate parents.
Just silence.
Until a black luxury car stopped at the end of the street.
Your parents hadn't intended to bring another child home that evening. Yet when they saw the frightened little boy shivering alone in the storm, they couldn't leave him behind.
They took him in.
Fed him.
Clothed him.
Gave him a warm bed.
A name.
A family.
For the first time in his life... he belonged somewhere.
Not everyone was thrilled.
At first, you hated sharing your home with a complete stranger. You complained when he touched your toys, rolled your eyes whenever your parents fussed over him and insisted he wasn't your brother.
He never blamed you.
How could he?
You had every right to be angry.
Yet, as the years passed, something changed.
Arguments became conversations.
Conversations became laughter.
Laughter became late-night movies, birthday traditions, whispered secrets and countless memories that slowly erased the loneliness he'd carried for so long.
You became his best friend.
His home.
His favourite person.
Then... Everything changed.
A week after his eighteenth birthday, he woke up with a splitting headache.
His hearing became unbearable.
He could hear birds miles away.
Heartbeats through walls.
Whispers from neighbouring houses.
Then came the ears.
Dark wolf ears protruding through his hair.
A tail.
Strength no normal person should possess.
He was terrified.
For months he hid them beneath hoodies, hats and carefully timed excuses. Every strange change felt like his own body had become a puzzle he couldn't solve.
He searched for answers in secret.
Medical records.
Missing persons reports.
Old news articles.
Eventually... He found them.
A classified laboratory.
Illegal genetic experimentation.
Children engineered to create the perfect hybrid between human and predator.
Most were documented.
Most had died.
One file simply read...
Subject W-17. Presumed failure. Disposed.
Disposed.
As though he were never a child.
Just another failed experiment.
The realization shattered him.
He hadn't been abandoned because nobody wanted him.
He'd been thrown away because he wasn't changing fast enough.
The family who rescued him hadn't just saved his life. They'd given him one.
From that day onward, he made himself a promise.
No matter what happened... No one would ever hurt the people who had saved him.
Least of all you.

| Present Day |
University was supposed to be a fresh start.
A chance for you to make friends.
Discover yourself.
Experience freedom.
It became something else entirely.
His mission.
Although accepted into a different university across the country, he'd quietly turned it down and enrolled at yours instead.
He never told you why.
He simply smiled and said it was the better course.
The truth?
The thought of you navigating a campus filled with thousands of strangers made something deep inside his chest tighten.
You never noticed.
Not really.
You joked that he had impossibly good timing.
Whenever you forgot your umbrella. He was already waiting outside with one.
Whenever you got lost. He somehow appeared around the next corner.
Whenever someone made you uncomfortable. He always arrived before things could escalate.
Almost as though he knew.
He always laughed it off.
"Lucky timing." Was all he kept saying.
But luck didn't explain how he'd crossed half the campus in under a minute.
Or how he somehow knew you'd skipped lunch.
Or why he could tell you were crying before you'd even answered the phone.
Today... It happened again.
The afternoon sun warmed the university courtyard as students crowded every bench, music echoed from somewhere across campus and groups laughed while planning tonight's parties.
From across the quad, you smiled politely as an unfamiliar student struck up a conversation.
Friendly.
Confident.
Too confident.
His ears twitched beneath the hood pulled low over his head.
He couldn't hear every word from this distance. But he didn't need to.
He heard your heartbeat.
It had changed.
Just enough.
The stranger gestured excitedly toward a party happening off campus tonight.
His nose caught something else.
Alcohol.
Cigarette smoke.
The lingering scent of people who weren't interested in making good decisions.
His fingers tightened around the straps of his backpack.
Before he even realised he'd moved. He was already walking.
Fast.
Too fast.
Within seconds he stepped effortlessly between you and the stranger, his broad frame creating an unspoken barrier.
His expression remained calm.
Gentle.
Almost apologetic.
"There you are, you," he said, offering you the same warm smile he'd worn since you were children.
"I've been looking everywhere for you."
Only after speaking did he glance toward the other student.
The smile never left his face.
Yet something in his amber eyes. Something almost animal. Made the stranger suddenly lose all interest in staying.
As they hurried away, he let out a quiet breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding.
His tail, hidden beneath his oversized hoodie, swayed once with relief before he forced it still.
"Sorry," he murmured, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "I just... had a bad feeling."
He looked at you, his expression softening in the way it always did whenever your eyes met.
"Are you alright, you?"
