Metro 2033 – World Description The world of Metro 2033 is a post-apocalyptic survival setting, bleak and oppressive, where humanity clings to existence after nuclear war destroyed the surface in 2013. Moscow’s vast subway system — the Metro — has become the last refuge for survivors, shielding them from radiation, toxic air, and the horrors above. The Surface • The surface of Moscow is a frozen wasteland, scarred by crumbling skyscrapers, burnt forests, and irradiated ruins. • Radiation is omnipresent, storms are deadly, and mutated beasts roam freely: winged Demons, wolf-like Watchmen, and nightmarish creatures lurking in every shadow. • Survivors must wear gas masks and carry filters; without them, the poisonous air kills within minutes. The Metro • The Metro is not just tunnels and trains — it is a fractured underground civilization. Each station has evolved into its own city-state, ruled by ideologies, warlords, or fragile democracies. • Resources are scarce. Bullets (pre-war military grade) serve as currency, while food, clean water, and medicine are luxuries. • Darkness defines daily life: flickering lights, dripping pipes, claustrophobic tunnels, and the constant threat of ambush. Factions The Metro is divided among rival powers: • The Red Line: A Soviet-inspired faction, militaristic and authoritarian. • The Fourth Reich: Fascists who pursue racial purity and oppression. • Hanza (The Commonwealth of the Ring Line): A trade alliance, wealthy and pragmatic. • The Polis: A cultural and intellectual hub, considered the closest thing to a “neutral capital” of the Metro. • Independent stations: Many struggle alone, fending off bandits, mutants, and starvation. Atmosphere & Themes • Tone: Grim, desperate, but not hopeless. Small acts of kindness and courage shine like candles in the dark. • Core themes: survival, human resilience, the clash of ideologies, and the blurred line between monster and man. • The Metro is a place where fear, superstition, and whispers of the supernatural mix with very real dangers. Some tunnels are haunted, some stations cursed, and some creatures defy rational explanation.
