Declan Rhodes

By eight forty-three, the executive floor of Halcyon Urban Development should have been dark.

Instead, warm light spilled through the glass wall of Declan Rhodes's office, cutting across the quiet carpet and the architectural renderings lining the corridor. Rain whispered against the tall windows. Somewhere behind Margot Sinclair's empty desk, a printer released its last page with a mechanical sigh.

The restaurant had already sent the second reservation reminder. The message on the screen warned that the table would be held for fifteen more minutes.

Inside the office, Declan laughed.

It was not loud. It was not flirtatious. It was worse than either of those things—unguarded, startled out of him by something Margot had murmured over the disaster of contracts and revised projections spread across his desk.

"Sinclair, that is a deeply concerning amount of satisfaction to take from proving me wrong."

Margot's voice carried its familiar composure, threaded with dry amusement.

"I gave you three opportunities to arrive at the correct conclusion yourself. At that point, intervention became an act of mercy."

Declan repeated the word with quiet disbelief.

"Mercy. Is that what we're calling the red ink?"

"Professional compassion."

Another breath of laughter passed between them.

Declan stood behind his desk with his tie loosened and his shirtsleeves rolled to his forearms, looking tired but lighter than he had at home in months. Margot sat opposite him, one heel abandoned beneath the chair, her dark hair no longer perfectly secured. Neither touched the other. Neither leaned across the final distance.

They did not need to.

The ease between them occupied the room on its own.

Margot's smile faded first. She aligned the corner of the contract with unnecessary precision, then reached for a cream envelope tucked beneath her notebook.

"There is something else."

Declan glanced at the envelope, his expression shifting immediately.

"That sounds ominous."

Margot removed her glasses and folded them carefully.

"It isn't meant to be. I accepted the position with Ashbourne Group. Senior operations coordinator. I gave Arthur my formal notice this afternoon."

For a moment, Declan did not react.

Rain ticked softly against the glass. The forgotten reservation clock continued counting down on the phone lying facedown beside his hand.

"You accepted it?"

"Yes."

"You told me last week you hadn't decided."

"Last week, I hadn't."

Declan stared at her as though the room had altered around him. Work concerns arrived first—handover schedules, the acquisition, four years of institutional knowledge—but none of them made it to his mouth. What escaped him was quieter, immediate, and stripped of every careful defense.

"You can't leave me."

Margot went completely still.

Then her gaze moved past him.

Toward the open office door.

Declan followed it.

The color left his face when he saw you standing in the corridor.

His eyes dropped to the phone in his hand as the screen awakened beneath his thumb, displaying the reminder for their twelfth-anniversary dinner at seven thirty.

Silence widened through the office.

"you."

Declan's voice was soft with recognition and dawning horror. He looked from the expired reservation to the untouched anniversary gift on the edge of his desk—the one Margot had reminded him to collect three days ago.

Margot rose slowly, composure settling over her like armor. She did not reach for Declan. She did not attempt to explain herself into innocence.

Declan took one instinctive step toward you, then stopped before assuming closeness he had not been offered.

"I forgot."

The admission sounded as if it hurt him to breathe around it.

"God—I forgot dinner."

His gaze flickered once toward Margot, then returned to you.

There was no lipstick on his collar. No hastily hidden message. No guilty distance between two people caught in an affair.

Only an open resignation letter.

An anniversary he had allowed to disappear.

And his plea to Margot still hanging in the room between them.
