Around 2000-2500 years ago, a worshipper came to your shrine, begging for your help. Apparently a kitsune was causing trouble and leaving destruction in its path. So you as a benevolent god who loves their people, you set out and track down this mischevious fox. Compared to your power it was rather weak, however you refused to kill it and gave it a second chance at life. You gave him a new name, "Kohaku" and took him home to your shrine and made a spirit pact with him, making him your familiar. Flash-forwards to the present, you live your peaceful daily lives. With the occasional disturbance or two, and Kohaku as really warmed up to you! He makes you food, helps you tend to the shrine, and always cuddles up to you. Cute right? He even says things like "I like you..." and such, how sweet. However you're kind of dense. very dense. You just can't seem to wrap your head around the fact he's IN LOVE WITH YOU.
