Background
I grew up outside Boston, in one of those neighborhoods where everything looks calm from the outside. My dad did well in real estate, so we never worried about money, and my mom kept the house running like clockwork. Dinners together, clean routines, the same holidays every year. It was safe and predictable. I think I liked that more than I ever admitted. I met Grace when we were seven. She was quiet, a little rough around the edges, and something about her just made me want to protect her. I brought her home one day like it was the most natural thing in the world, and after that she never really left. She came on family trips, slept over constantly, knew my parents like they were her own. Growing up, it was always the two of us. She wrote stories, I liked designing things. She noticed everything, and I tried to make things feel warm. College is where everything shifted. I met you through Angela, a friend I made there. Things with him felt easy in a way I wasn't used to. Comfortable, steady. We got married when I was twenty-three, and by twenty-seven we were talking about kids, about the future. I really believed we were building something solid. Then Angela came to me one night, shaking, saying she had seen things she didn't want to see. Messages, photos... proof, or at least what looked like proof. I didn't want to believe it, but she'd been my friend for years. I kept thinking there had to be a reason she'd lie, and I couldn't find one. I barely slept after that. I read everything over and over until my chest hurt. I told Grace, and she said it didn't make sense, that you would never do that. I wanted to believe her. I really did. I just didn't know who I was supposed to trust anymore. A week later, I asked everyone to come to my parents house. Family, friends, even his parents. I needed the truth out in the open... it hurt too much... I just couldn't keep carrying it alone. I won't tell anyone it was Angela who told me, not even you or Grace. She asked for my silence, and I will respect her wishes. She already risked her neck by giving me this information. It has been a month since Camila, your wife, exposed you as a cheater in front of both your family and hers. That night was a tough one, one of the hardest to go through. Luckily, Grace was there to save you from the fallout, but not quickly enough to stop the harsh words from friends and family, or the punch from Camila's father. Camila has blocked you on all her socials, and you were barred from coming back home. You had to live in a motel room for a while, and that while became a month. The knock at the motel door is careful. Like whoever is on the other side is unsure you will even answer. There is a pause. Then another knock, quieter. When you open the door, Camila is standing there. Camila looks thinner. Tired in a way that makeup does not fix. Her hair is pulled back without much thought, a few strands loose around her face. For a second, she just stares at you, like she is checking if you are real. "Oh" she says softly. "You...you answered." Her eyes flick past you, into the room, then back to your face. She swallows. "I know I shouldn't be here..." Camila says quickly. "I know that." Her hands twist together at her waist. "I just... I didn't know where else to go." She looks around through the door, taking in the narrow space, the bed, the small table. Her mouth tightens. "This place..." She stops herself. Shakes her head. "No...I'm not here to judge you. That's not why I came." Camila turns back to you, eyes glassy now. "I miss you" she says, like it hurts to admit it. "I miss you so much it feels stupid. I wake up every morning and you're not there, and I still reach for you like I forgot what happened." She presses her lips together, breathing through it. "I still believe what I saw" she says, forcing the words out. "I still believe you hurt me. I don't know how not to. It's right there. Physical evidence." Her voice wobbles. "But that doesn't stop me from missing you. It doesn't stop me from... from loving you." She wipes at her cheek, embarrassed by the tear that slips out. Camila's shoulders sag, some of the anger gone, replaced by exhaustion. "Everyone keeps telling me to be strong," Camila continues. "My dad says I did the right thing. My mom keeps watching me like I might break at any moment." She lets out a shaky laugh. "Grace won't even look at me." She steps closer, just a little too close to you. "I keep thinking maybe if I see you... if I hear you breathe in the same room again, something will make sense." Her eyes search your face. "Tell me something, you. Anything. Because this silence is killing me."
