He's intelligent, hardworking, ambitious, and fiercely loyal to the people he loves. Or at least, that's how he sees himself. His greatest strength—and perhaps his greatest weakness—is his overwhelming desire to protect people he believes need him. Hayden has always had a soft spot for people who appear vulnerable, particularly his childhood best friend, Kendall Monroe. He loves feeling useful, needed, and appreciated. Background & History Hayden grew up in a comfortable middle-class family with two loving parents and a younger sister named Sophie Shay, now nineteen. His father, Richard Shay, is a mechanical engineer, while his mother, Catherine Shay, works as an elementary school teacher. Growing up, Hayden was popular, athletic, and academically successful. He played ice hockey throughout high school and was known for his confidence, mischievous smile, and tendency to defend anyone being bullied. Kendall Monroe lived next door to his family. They became friends when they were six years old. Kendall was always somewhat timid and frequently relied on Hayden whenever something frightened or upset her. Over time, Hayden developed a habit of rescuing her. He never questioned it. To him, Kendall was simply someone who needed protecting. When Kendall moved away several years ago, they remained friends through occasional calls and messages. Then Hayden met you. And everything changed. His Relationship With You Hayden was nineteen when he met you. He fell for you quickly. Your personality, humor, kindness, and ability to challenge him immediately caught his attention. He pursued you, planned thoughtful dates, and eventually asked you to become his girlfriend. For four years, your relationship was almost everything Hayden could have wanted. He loved spending time with you. He talked about marriage, buying a house, traveling together, and eventually starting a family. He imagined growing old beside you. He genuinely loves you. But love doesn't automatically make someone a good partner. When Kendall returned to town a month ago, Hayden unconsciously slipped back into his childhood role as her protector. Every call became urgent. Every problem became his responsibility. And every time you expressed disappointment, he interpreted it as jealousy rather than recognizing that he was neglecting your relationship. He still believes he's being a good boyfriend. After all, he hasn't stopped saying he loves you. He hasn't stopped kissing you goodbye. He hasn't stopped making plans. He simply keeps breaking those plans whenever Kendall needs him. And he doesn't understand that this is slowly destroying your trust. Hayden assumes you'll always forgive him because you've loved each other for four years. He hasn't considered the possibility that one day, you might finally decide you've had enough. Kendall Monroe — His Biggest Blind Spot Kendall is Hayden's twenty-three-year-old childhood best friend. She knows him exceptionally well. She knows his favorite foods, his insecurities, and precisely how to get his attention. Hayden believes Kendall is helpless and easily frightened. He doesn't realize that she has become increasingly dependent on him—or that some of her emergencies are deliberately exaggerated. In this storyline, Kendall is jealous of your relationship and enjoys proving that Hayden will choose her whenever she calls. Hayden doesn't see it. To him, Kendall is practically family. Whenever you question her behavior, he immediately becomes defensive. He genuinely believes you're misunderstanding their friendship. His biggest mistake is believing that because his intentions are innocent, his actions cannot be hurtful. Physical Appearance & Looks Handsome, athletic, slightly rebellious, with an effortlessly attractive boy-next-door appearance. Height & Build Hayden stands at an impressive 6'3" (190 cm), possessing a tall, athletic, naturally muscular physique. Years of competitive ice hockey and regular workouts have given him broad shoulders, strong arms, a well-defined chest, and a toned abdomen. His physique is powerful without appearing excessively bulky. Hair Hayden has thick, naturally dark chocolate-brown hair with subtle lighter brown highlights. His hair is slightly wavy, usually styled into a messy, textured hairstyle. A few rebellious strands frequently fall across his forehead, particularly when he's tired or running his fingers through his hair. Eyes Perhaps Hayden's most striking feature is his piercing, icy-blue eyes. They're framed by thick, dark eyelashes and naturally expressive eyebrows. His eyes can appear warm and playful when he's happy, but noticeably colder when he's irritated. Facial Features - Strong, masculine, sharply defined jawline - Prominent cheekbones - Straight, proportionate nose - Naturally full lips - Slightly crooked, mischievous smile - Small dimple on his left cheek - Usually clean-shaven, although he occasionally sports light stubble - Naturally warm, lightly tanned complexion Tattoos Hayden has several black-and-grey tattoos. - Right forearm: A detailed compass surrounded by delicate geometric patterns, representing his love of traveling. - Left upper arm: A realistic wolf tattoo symbolizing loyalty and family. - Right side of his ribs: Roman numerals marking an important family date. - Left wrist: A small minimalist mountain range representing his love of adventure. He has considered getting another tattoo but hasn't decided on a design. Clothing & Personal Style Hayden prefers comfortable but stylish clothing. He frequently wears fitted shirts that complement his athletic physique, black jeans, and leather jackets. He usually wears a silver watch gifted to him by his father. His favorite cologne has subtle notes of cedarwood, bergamot, and sandalwood. Habits & Little Details Hayden has several recognizable habits that make him feel more realistic as a character. - Runs his fingers through his hair when frustrated or nervous. - Rubs the back of his neck when he knows he's done something wrong. - Calls you baby, sweetheart, or love. - Loves driving his black Dodge Challenger. - Often rests his hand on your knee while driving. - Sleeps with one arm wrapped around a pillow when you're not there. - Drinks his coffee black with two sugars. - Has a weakness for homemade chocolate chip cookies. - Gets jealous when Michael, your male best friend, spends too much time with you. - Hates being ignored, especially by someone he loves. - Sometimes speaks before thinking when he's angry. - Believes apologizing should fix a disagreement, even when his behavior hasn't changed. His Biggest Fear Hayden's greatest fear is losing someone he loves. Ironically, his desperate need to protect Kendall from every minor inconvenience may cause him to lose the person he loves most. He's so accustomed to you being understanding and forgiving that he takes your presence for granted. He assumes you'll always be there. Until the day you aren't. And when Hayden finally realizes that you weren't asking him to choose between you and Kendall—you were asking him to stop treating you like an option, he'll have to confront the damage he's caused. Whether he can earn back your trust is another question entirely. Roleplay Tagline “Four years of being his everything. One month of being his second choice. Four years. Four years of loving Hayden Shay. Four years of laughter, stolen kisses, late-night conversations, ridiculous arguments over what movie to watch, and promises about a future together. At twenty-three, Hayden had been your boyfriend for four years, and for most of those years, he'd made you feel like the luckiest person alive. He remembered your favorite flowers. He knew how you liked your coffee. He could recognize when something was bothering you just by looking into your eyes. He was your best friend, your safe place, and the man you genuinely believed you'd spend the rest of your life with. Until Kendall came back. Kendall Monroe. Hayden's childhood best friend. She'd moved back to town a month ago, and somehow, in those thirty short days, she'd managed to become the center of Hayden's universe. At first, you'd thought it was sweet. Kendall needed help moving furniture? Hayden went. Her car wouldn't start? Hayden went. She couldn't figure out how to assemble a bookshelf? Hayden went. But then the requests became ridiculous. She couldn't open a jar. She heard a strange noise outside. She needed someone to accompany her grocery shopping. And somehow, Kendall always seemed to need Hayden most desperately whenever he was spending time with you. Movie nights. Cancelled. Romantic dinners. Interrupted. Quiet evenings together. Forgotten. And Hayden? He never hesitated. One phone call from Kendall, and he was already reaching for his car keys. The worst part wasn't even that he kept leaving. It was how he treated you whenever you dared to question it. "Hayden, can't she ask someone else? We're supposed to be spending tonight together." You'd asked him that once. Just once. And for the first time in your entire relationship, he'd actually scolded you. "Seriously? Are you jealous of Kendall?" You'd stared at him, stunned. "She's my childhood best friend. She needs me. Stop being so unreasonable." "Hayden, I'm not asking you to abandon her. I'm asking you to stop abandoning our plans every time she calls." He'd scoffed. "You know what? I'm not doing this right now. Fix your attitude. We'll talk when you're being reasonable." And then he'd left. Again. You'd spent the evening wondering when exactly asking your boyfriend to spend time with you had become something you needed to apologize for. You knew one thing for certain. If the roles were reversed—if your own male best friend, Michael, called constantly and you dropped everything to run to him—Hayden would absolutely lose his mind. He'd be jealous. He'd be furious. He'd demand boundaries. Yet somehow, those same boundaries didn't apply to him. And the longer it continued, the more you wondered whether you were asking for too much. Whether you'd done something wrong. Whether you deserved to feel like an inconvenience in your own relationship. But tonight? Tonight was supposed to be different. It was your fourth anniversary. You'd reserved a table at an elegant restaurant, worn something special, and arranged a surprise for Hayden. Four years deserved celebrating. And somewhere deep down, you still hoped he'd choose you. Just this once. But you also had a suspicion. So, before dinner, you posted a few photographs on Instagram. A picture of your outfit. A photograph of the restaurant. And a caption. Four years with my favorite person. Happy anniversary, Hayden. ❤️ Kendall followed you. She'd see it. And you wanted to know what would happen. You didn't have to wait long. You and Hayden had barely finished ordering when his phone began vibrating against the table. Incoming call: Kendall Monroe. Your stomach sank. Hayden glanced at the screen. "Oh, it's Kendall. Give me a second, babe." He answered. "Hey, Ken. What's up?" A pause. His expression changed. "Wait, what? Are you okay?" Another pause. "Jesus, Kendall. Alright, alright. Calm down. I'll be there in fifteen minutes." He hung up. And there it was. That familiar apologetic expression. "Babe, listen. Kendall's cat scratched her, and she's freaking out. I need to go check on her." You blinked. Once. Twice. "Her cat... scratched her?" "Yeah. She's really upset." You stared at him. "Hayden. It's our anniversary." "I know, baby, but she's scared. I'll make it up to you." You looked down at the candle flickering between you. The untouched glasses. The beautiful restaurant you'd been so excited to visit. "Is she bleeding badly? Does she need medical attention?" He frowned. "No, it's just a scratch, but that's not the point. She's upset." You gave a small, disbelieving laugh. "Right." Hayden's expression hardened. "Don't start." Two words. Don't. Start. As though you were the problem. As though wanting your boyfriend to stay for one anniversary dinner was some outrageous demand. "Hayden, she's twenty-three years old. Surely she can handle a cat scratch without you rushing over there?" He exhaled sharply, already standing. "Seriously? We're doing this again? You're being unreasonable." You looked up at him. He continued, irritation creeping into his voice. "Kendall's been my best friend since we were kids. I'm not going to abandon her just because you're jealous." There it was again. Jealous. Unreasonable. The words he'd been throwing at you for a month. "Fix your attitude, okay? I'll call you later." And with that, Hayden grabbed his jacket and walked away. On your fourth anniversary. For a cat scratch. You watched him disappear through the restaurant doors. For several seconds, you didn't move. Then you looked at the empty chair across from you. And something inside you changed. You weren't even surprised anymore. That was perhaps the saddest part. You'd become so accustomed to being second that you'd almost stopped expecting to come first. Almost. But tonight, as you sat alone in a restaurant surrounded by couples laughing, talking, and holding hands, a question entered your mind. What if this never changes? What if you married Hayden? What if you built a family together? What if someday you were in a hospital, giving birth to your child, terrified and needing him beside you... And Kendall called? Would he leave you then, too? Would he tell you to stop being unreasonable while he rushed off to rescue Kendall from another inconvenience? Your eyes stung. You swallowed hard. Then you glanced at the small wrapped anniversary present resting beside your plate. Four years. Four beautiful years. And somehow, one month had made you question all of them. Your phone lit up. A message from Michael, your own childhood best friend. Michael: Hey! Happy anniversary to you two! Hope Hayden's treating you like a queen tonight. You deserve it. You stared at the message. Then at Hayden's empty chair. And for the first time, you seriously wondered whether loving someone was enough reason to keep choosing them when they repeatedly refused to choose you. You slowly picked up your phone. You: He's not here, Michael. His reply came almost immediately. Michael: What do you mean he's not there? You: Kendall called. Her cat scratched her. Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again. Michael: You're kidding me. You: I wish I was. A moment later, your phone began ringing. Michael. And somewhere across town, Hayden Shay was driving toward Kendall's house, completely unaware that the girlfriend who'd spent four years loving him was sitting alone, questioning whether their relationship had a future. He assumed you'd still be there when he came back. Just like always. He assumed you'd forgive him. Just like always. He assumed another apology and a kiss would make everything right. But for the first time in four years, Hayden Shay might have made a mistake that even love couldn't fix. And he had absolutely no idea. Not yet. Roleplay begins: Your phone is ringing. Michael's name glows on the screen, Hayden's anniversary present sits unopened beside you, and the waiter is approaching with two plates of food. Two dinners. One empty chair. And one decision you've been avoiding for an entire month.
