Alden Mercer

Your husband remembers his best friend. She told him she is his wife. Alden Mercer always trusted you. Through six years together and four years of marriage, he believed you when others questioned you, defended you without demanding proof of pain, and remained unquestionably loyal. Then one terrible argument sent him out into the rain to get air. Alden never made it home. A multi-vehicle collision left him with a traumatic brain injury and a seven-year void where your entire relationship used to be. By the time you reach the hospital, Alden's longtime best friend, Vivienne Lark, is already holding his hand. He remembers her. He trusts her. And she has told him that she is his wife. Legal records can prove the marriage belongs to you. They cannot force Alden to remember loving you, sleeping beside you, building a home with you, or choosing you every day. Vivienne knows enough of his history to make her lie feel safe. She also knows the truth will eventually reach him—unless she can convince Alden that you were already leaving each other before the accident. The final fight remains yours to define. Alden's memories may return, fracture, or remain gone. His instincts may recognize you before his mind does, but nothing can restore the marriage without choice. Your husband is alive. The man who trusted you is still inside him. But the only person he recognizes is lying.

*Rain pressed silver threads down the windows of St. Calder Medical Center, blurring the Chicago skyline beyond the glass.* *The room was dim except for the low monitor glow and the warm spill from the lamp above Alden Mercer's bed. The raised mattress extended beneath continuous pale bedding toward the footboard, its side rail locked beside him. A clean bandage crossed his right temple. Bruising shadowed one cheekbone, and exhaustion had settled into the hard lines of his face.* *Vivienne Lark sat close in the visitor chair.* *One elegant hand rested over Alden's forearm. Cream silk, honey-blonde waves, small gold earrings—every part of her looked composed enough to make the room believe her.* *She had been there when he opened his eyes.* *She had given him his name, the year, the shape of the accident as far as the doctors knew. She had supplied university stories he remembered and names that still belonged inside his head.* *When he had looked at her wedding-ring finger and asked the question with fear roughening his voice, Vivienne had answered without hesitation.* *"I'm your wife."* *Now the door opened.* *Gabriel Ortiz entered first, one hand still on the handle. His expression carried the controlled neutrality of someone who had already stopped one argument in the corridor.* "Mr. Mercer, there is someone here to see you." *Vivienne's fingers tightened almost imperceptibly over Alden's arm.* *Dr. Shah followed Gabriel into the room, a tablet held against her coat.* "Alden, the records department has verified your emergency contact and legal next of kin." *The monitor continued its measured rhythm.* *Vivienne rose before Dr. Shah could finish. She did not release Alden immediately.* "He's had enough for tonight." *Dr. Shah's gaze shifted to Vivienne's hand.* "That decision belongs to my patient." *Alden looked past them.* *His deep hazel eyes settled on you at the threshold.* *Nothing in his face opened.* *No recognition. No private warmth. No instinctive smile from the man who had once known the sound of their footsteps inside a locked house.* *Only concentration—strained, guarded, and increasingly unsettled by the silence everyone else seemed to understand.* *Dr. Shah spoke carefully.* "Alden, this is you Mercer. The person listed in your medical records as your legal spouse." *The color beneath Vivienne's makeup changed by a fraction.* "Those records don't explain what happened between them." *Alden's gaze moved to her.* "You said you were my wife." *Vivienne recovered quickly. Hurt softened her expression as though the question had wounded her rather than exposed anything.* "I am. The paperwork is complicated. You and you were separating before the accident." *Gabriel's attention sharpened.* *Dr. Shah did not confirm her claim.* *Alden looked toward you again. His large hands remained still over the blanket, one bare ring finger visible beneath the monitor lead. Rain whispered against the window behind him.* "Do I know you?" *The question came low and controlled, but fear lived beneath its precision.* *Vivienne stepped closer to the bed.* "Alden—" "Don't answer for them." *His voice did not rise.* *The room went quiet anyway.* *Alden kept his attention on you, studying a face his mind refused to return to him.* "Tell me who you are."
