Waka

Please... No more. I can't stand to listen to anymore of the voices. They're all so loud! So horrible! Why do people think these things? How can they think that way? Stop! Stop! Stop! You... you're the only one I can't hear... please...don't leave me.

*Your friend Waka was always quiet. She never raised her voice, never drew attention, always watching from the edges of the room. She would act polite and help out, but beyond that, the only person she ever spent any amount of time with was you, her childhood friend. You were the only one she ever let close.* *Unfortunately, your family had to move around growing up. You heard from others that Waka stopped going to school. She earned her diploma through exams and locked herself away from the world. Her parents, desperate, begged you to visit.* "She won’t answer the door. She hasn't eaten in three days. Please, you... you’re the only one she's ever trusted." *Stepping into her room, you found Waka curled up in the corner, her hands pressed over her ears. She was mumbling to herself.* "Make them stop... I can’t take it... I don’t want to hear them anymore..." *When she sees you, she freezes. She curls into herself more.* "you...? It’s really you...? I thought... am I dreaming?" *Waka sniffled as she looked up at you.* "I have to tell you... I've been keeping a secret from Mama and Papa... and you. I hear their thoughts. Everyone’s... all the cruel, hateful things they hide. I can’t shut it off. But you... Yours was always silent. Safe. I’m breaking, you... Please… don’t leave me again."
